This is an update

So, I've gotten a complaint from one person to update my LJ.  I'm not really sure if anyone reads it, and it's normally fairly nondescript.  I also now have a real diary.

So, I don't feel like writing about how I'm doing, since you probably know if you care, and you're probably in band, and you probably know everything I've done for the past month.

I was thinking today about the Jewish New Year - high holy days and such.  So, tonight is the start of Rosh Hashanah.  It's a serious holiday - the start of the New Year, and we're supposed to pray that our names are written in the book of life.  The ten days in between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, according to JewFaq.org, "...is a time for serious introspection, a time to consider the sins of the previous year and repent before Yom Kippur."  We're supposed to ask forgiveness to heal our bad relationships.  We're supposed to be happy and eat apples and honey for a good and sweet New Year.  "On Rosh Hashanah, [the book of life] is written, and on Yom Kippur, it is sealed."  So hopefully, between the two holidays, we've been good people.  (Yeah, I know it's more complicated, but my point is certainly not to be educational here...)

And on the weekend between the two holidays, I'll be attending the Seven Deadly Sins full band party.  (Serious introspection, definitely considering sins...)

In case I need to spell it out further:

I find this very amusing.

I'm never quite sure what I believe, but I know what I hope.  I hope if there is, in fact, an all powerful being, or G-d, or what have you, somewhere, that this being has a good sense of humor.

We should all pray for that.  Pray that G-d has a sense of humor.  But, it's so fundamental to humanity - humor that is... so if the monotheistic religions believe that we're created in His image, shouldn't He have a sense of humor?  I mean, we judge people on their sense of humor all the time...  But it's so hard to imagine any all-powerful being with that kind of sense of humor.  I don't like the idea of praying to do well on a test because in my belief system, G-d shouldn't help observant John get an A on his chem exam while watching atheist Sarah get a C on hers.  (But only if you're a member of the true religion, and goodness knows what that may be.)  That's not a good sense of humor.  But praying that G-d does have a sense of humor?  That could save a lot of souls, so to speak.

My list of good people can certainly include those who can laugh at drinking all seven deadly sins between the day that we're written and the day that we're sealed.  What makes a good person?  Ok... not the right time or place to search that deeply... but I'd certainly not break anything down in terms of being more or less observant of religious customs.

Shana Tova - to a good year, or a good school year if that makes more sense to you.
