I went to the ribbon cutting ceremony for the refurbished IC lab at SJSU today. I even wore decent clothes to try and look nice for some of the industry supporters. I'm not much for shmoozing so I didn't talk to many of the industry reps. I did talk to my former professors, but spent most of the time catching up with some of the students that are still down there. Jaun and Prashanta are both working on their Masters. She said she'd finish in about a year. Jaun said he may take 2 or 3 more. I also talked to some of the undergrads and asked about the projects they're working on. I'm glad I had a chance to talk to Kelly. She's a doll. Bright too. Spent most of the Summer doing a research project in South Dakota. She's majoring in chemical engineering, but when she first described the project it sounded more like materials research. I guess she's been invited to present the project down in LA at one of their conferences.
I stopped at my favorite bar in downtown San Jose. It's right across from where I catch the bus. I was talking to the bartender about how drastically the downtown area had changed since I started going down there about 3 and half years ago. She didn't expect the area to pick back up. I expect it'll take another year or so to get businesses back into the area, but I doubt it'll return to the success it had when the economy was booming.
A funny anecdote to the story. I was kind of wondering about what to wear to the ceremony last night. I walked over to the gas station to buy some smokes. As I came up to the front security gate in the complex a car was exiting so I decided to duck through the vehicle gate entrance. I smacked the hell out of my left eyebrow on one of the guide brackets for the gate. What kind of clothes go well with a gashed forehead?
