My mom liked this mission the most out of our recent trips because of the barracks that housed the soldiers across the street. I agree. The history of the mission being used as a buffer to keep Russians from settling down the coast of California is interesting.
The story behind the raising of this flag after taking over the barracks was fascinating. California was it's own republic for a few weeks before the United States laid claim to it.
The funniest part was reading a journal entry by one of the soldiers that relieved the Mexican soldiers from their command of the mission.
"We arrived shortly before dawn and relieved the sleeping sentry of his rifle before waking him."
