Progressive Caucus of the Southern Comfort Conference

Jul 05, 2009 20:45

I just sent this out to a bunch of folks in my email address book. If you didn't get it and you would like to be involved, please comment or message me so I know to add you.

Friends and colleagues,
Many of us have been involved with the Southern Comfort Conference for years, sometimes on and off, and have tried to make changes in the overall structure that has perpetuated racism, classism, ablism, ageism, fatphobia, cissexism and many other things that place privilege at the top of the agenda. The bad news is this: we are not where we want to be. The good news is that the current Board are some of the people who have helped make progress, and they have begun to respond when issues are brought directly to them. In a recent Planning Committee conversation about the great number of youth, POCs, and non-gender-conforming folks whose proposals were rejected, one of the Board members said that she would welcome targeted pressure to ensure inclusion in future years. Since I have already talked with many of you about this idea, I say we go for it. Here's what I'm thinking:

The Progressive Caucus is a loose group of people committed to increasing empowerment and inclusion in SCC. We stand opposed to oppression in all forms, and we will work proactively as a group and individually to reach out to underserved/minority communities.

Please forward this to like-minded folks. If you do not want to be involved or would like me to use a different email address, please let me know. If you ask me to take you off the list, don't worry, I won't think it's because you don't care. I know we all have to choose where we invest our time, and I know many of you have given up on SCC. If you don't tell me to take you off the list, you can expect to have a facebook and/or googlegroup invite in your inbox sometime this week.

With great love and respect,
J
