From 'Strider', FotR
'A stout little fellow with red cheeks,' said Mr Butterbur solemnly. Pippin chuckled, but Sam looked indignant. 'That won't help you much; it goes for most hobbits, Barley, he says to me,' continued Mr Butterbur with a glance at Pippin. 'But this one is taller than some and fairer than most, and he has a cleft in his chin: perky chap with a bright eye. Begging your pardon, but he said it, not me.'
The description that Gandalf gave Barliman Butterbur of today's birthday boy Frodo Baggins. But is he stout as in a solid little hobbit body or stout as in a stout heart? I like to think it's a stout heart and that has reminded me of a musical that we did at high school - The New Moon - which had a stirring little tune 'Stout Hearted Men'.
Give me a perian
Who's a stout-hearted perian
Who will march from the Shire to Mordor.
I've got a yen
For a brave perian
Who should be hailed in Middle-earth lore. Oh!
As great as a Noldor
Grim burden to shoulder
With eyes bright he steps to the fore.
There's nothing that Sauron can do
To spoil or mar a plan
When it all began
With a stout-hearted perian.
Happy Birthday to two stout-hearted periannath.
