Today I dreamed that, in the future, aliens had come to destroy us. Nothing we did slowed them down, and they would be there in their giant ships very soon. But for some reason I was at a party. All of my friends were there from college, and I was having fun, although I had this feeling that it would start being unpleasant within the next hour, perhaps after I had too much to drink.
Then my mother showed up at the party with a package and a letter that she wanted me to deliver. The package had to be refrigerated at all times. She gave me the recipient's name and handed me the letter. She said that delivering the package might be the only way to save us all from the aliens. The letter had a date on it: 1529. In the back yard of the house, there was a swimming pool crowded with people, and behind that was a time machine. I pushed my way through the people and put the package in a refrigerator inside the machine. Then I started telling people around me what I was supposed to do, even though I knew that I probably shouldn't tell anyone.
The letter had other numbers printed on it that I assumed was an address, but there were two many of them, and when turned upside down, the numbers all became other numbers, so that I couldn't tell which side of the envelope was the top. I looked for my mom to try and ask her, but she had left. Finally, I decided there was nothing for it but to get in the time machine and go (although I didn't want to leave the party). I punched in the year 1529. When I got back out I was in the woods. I found a town nearby and went asking around. Somehow this led me to a mother and daughter who told me to follow them. They had wooden sticks with round globs on the end that I assumed were made of gunpowder with some kind of slimy substance around the outside. We used these small arrowheads that caught on fire when rubbed against something to light these torches, which glowed like ashes and seemed to go out frequently. When I looked up from lighting mine, my two guides had disappeared inside the mouth of a nearby cave.
I followed, all the while trying to keep my torch lit so I could see. As I rounded a corner, I saw little faces embedded in the rock on the floor and walls. They looked angry, and would periodically shoot flames from their open mouths. I tiptoed around them, though it was still hard to see where they all were. Eventually, I made it through. I rounded another corner to see torch light flooding a chamber. There was a podium, and pews, like a church. It appeared to be a secret meeting of some kind. The man standing by the podium, halted his talk when I appeared and glared at me. I searched out the mother and daughter who had led me there and went to sit near them as if I belonged where I was.
In a moment, the man began to speak again, in revolutionary tones. From his speech, it became clear that the aliens were here in this time as well, though in smaller numbers. But he claimed that they only terrorized the lower classes, that the wealthy and powerful remained unharmed by the invaders. He then claimed, to my surprise, that these invaders were creations of the man I had been sent back in time to see. I interrupted him, and tried to tell him that I had a package for that man that might help to end all of this, but the speaker either did not believe me or wasn't listening.
This was around when I woke up.
