I know it's been a while but I have been trying to procrastinate less and do more research since I am working on two original research papers in addition to my thesis. So if lots has happened, I wouldn't know (don't assume that I have been reading...)
But I felt that I should make some mention of what happened last night.
Last night at around 1:30, Amadou Cisse, a chemistry PHD student, was shot and killed on Ellis and 61st. The assaliant(s) is/are unknown and the University offering an award for any information. This really hit me because of how close to home it is. My heart goes out to his family and friends. It is my/our university and I know that it has been getting more precarious in the last few years (what with the shootings near Leona's as faceless_wonder has had to endure, the mugging spree where students were targeted on campus property...) but it's still unimaginable that something like this could happen. That corner is barely a block away from the new dorm that is being constructed, from BJ (my dining hall for three years). We have the illusion of safety especially in an academic atmosphere. Which explains why school shootings are so terrible to comprehend. He had just finished defending his thesis (or was going to) and the University has decided to award him his degree post-humously. So terribly UC but it's quite kind and touching. I thought that you all should hear about this because Amadou Cisse should be remembered and the precarious but precious environment that we all live in.
My heart also goes out to the people who have to go to UC in this atmosphere.
