the arguement against

Delta Goodrem is famed for her precocious string of hits, but her misses have gone unremarked. This is a shame because they characterise her so much more acutely.

She has, for example, missed out on being 20, fast-forwarding through the next few decades to achieve dowdy diva status quicker than you can say Barbra Streisand.

With her youth and freshness parlayed into uptight saccharine, she makes domesticated, germ-free music for people who used to have fun, but have grown out of it. She even has a washing-machine playing on her back-up track. (I was born to try, churn, churn - listen, it's true.)

Then there's the business with Mark "The Poo" Philippoussis who, according to her website, she wishes well. Wishing an ex-partner well may be the only dignified recourse for a dumped fiftysomething. But if you're barely out of high school and gorgeous, then surely what you do is get trashed and be photographed straddling Robbie Williams in a limo.

May her next hit be on a married man. Or a married woman. May her next miss be a misjudgement of mega proportions. Maybe then she'll be halfway bearable.
