penghu

last friday, (27 april) i got a call from someone. the call came at 12.10pm with the caller insisting that i drive to yonghe to pick him up at 1pm. making all the more surprising was that the caller was supposed to be in cambodia. by 2pm we were at the airport on standby for a flight to magong on penghu a small island group off the west coast of taiwan. so there we went. the first day we just kind of wandered around the city after getting settled in to our little beachside room. then big seafood dinner and back to wander around the moonlit beach in search of special sand that glows in the dark.

the second day we got up early for a relaxing morning on the beach. books in tow we hauled ourselves to the beach and relaxed while chatting about anything and everything. then we rushed in to shower and head on our daytrip of three of the other islands. we boarded a boat to go to two island very close to the main island. the first island we went is known for fresh fish soup. so we got some of that after walking around for a while. then we went to the second island which really had nothing but some abandoned buildings.

then we got back on the boat for what turned out to be an almost two hour ride to a faraway island. the last island was actually quite large. it also has a very large amount of scenic areas. it was as green as ireland. and some of the coastal areas seemed to feel very similar. then there's an area that is in all of travel brochures for penghu. (see pic below) anyone who can guess what it is wins a prize. the boat going there it wasn't so bad because we were going with the waves. coming back was a different story. it seems everyone got sick, except for the two of us.

once we got back to magong it was time for dinner. we went in search of the english newspapers. eventually we found one of the papers, but not the one with the good comics. *sigh. not nearly enough classifieds. then retired for a night of chatting, tv, and mosquito-proof netting. the next day we ran around the island in search of nothing in particular. then found the standby line at the airport. that's what we call a good weekend excursion.
