“Goodbye. “
His nose and forehead were red. Sunburn probably. A red bandana was tied, Rambo style, around his head and weakly peeked out from beneath his mess of blonde hair. The boom box that hung from his right hand was blaring “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper. It was a very appropriate song given the current circumstance. It was the last day of the year, sophomore year for her, and senior year for him.
She took a deep breath as she approached the moment she had been anticipating and dreading all day. She punched his arm lightly and put on a brave smile. “Hey you,” she said. He simply glanced at her. “Whutsup?” he replied. She opened her mouth to begin the monologue that had been constantly rehearsed throughout the day, but was interrupted. Suddenly the vice principal appeared out of nowhere to question him about the squirt gun pinned under his left arm. She did not hear the conversation, once again she found herself rehearsing her speech. After what seemed like years, he turned his attention back to her. He raised his eyebrows, “You were saying?” She jumped right in from the beginning “I just wanted to thank you.” She blurted. She made a mental note to slow down and calm herself. “I know it seems like a million years ago, but at one time we were friends, and I wanted to thank you for everything that happened then.” She was horror-struck at how far she had strayed from her script already and became increasingly nervous. She tried desperately to keep her cool, with no avail. “And also,” she continued “don’t mess yourself up too much in college. I mean I know its college and you are bound to get in situations just dripping with the opportunity to get completely and totally messed up, but still. Don’t wreck yourself. I am rambling now aren’t I? ” He laughed. The noise immediately relaxed her. “I’ll try.” He said simply.
His eyes wandered down the hall. She could tell he wanted to join his friends in their celebration of finishing school. The Alice Cooper song ended. She did not hear the next track. “And I also just wanted to say goodbye. So, it was fun, good luck in life, congratulations on making it all four years, and…goodbye.” She could feel her face growing hot. Something about this boy made her lose every fiber of control and she was left at the mercy of her hormones, never a good thing. “All right,’ he said with a smile. She nodded and turned on her heel toward the stairs, away from him. Away from the happy cries of his fellow seniors, and all the memories she had of them.
Tears welled in her eyes and she climbed the stairs that had definitely grown longer and steeper than they were earlier in the afternoon. She walked to the window on the second landing and pressed herself against it to get a glance at the parking lot. She saw him and his friends make their way to their cars. Laughing and dancing to the music continuously sounding from him small green-ish stereo. They drove away through a cloud of dust that settled into the echoes of their happiness. “Goodbye,” she whispered aloud, closing her eyes. She could hear his laugh buzzing in her ears. Shaking her head, she muted the sounds of her broken heart for a moment.
“Goodbye.”
