based on comparable homes in my neighbourhood, without further renos, we could list at 340000.00 and probaby sell about 335000.00 not to bad with the purchase price of 174000.00 and a mtg of 150000.00. No we're not selling, I just like to look.

I guess I should clarify.. that there are now Family Homes, around 250,000 in the areas of Calgary that I could live in. Reasons being:
- Jason buses to work.. 2 hours to work, and 2 hours back home. Not acceptable.
- Aiden is well placed in Ecole Varsity Acres. I loathe the idea of changing his school on him, because I experienced first hand the social difficulties that arise in changing schools (I also want Rowan to have the same kindergarten teacher)
- My parents are currently in Tuscany, though there is a move for them in the near future, they will not ever live on the East Side, my mom likes the West Side, I like the West Side too!

So, we're stuck for now.. in a place that is barely decent for two children, but even the rental market is a freaking nightmare, so we can't even move into a better rental property...

I understand reasons for you wanting to stay in the area you currently are in, but if you want to own a home you have to compromise some wants vs. needs to take that frist step into home ownership. That's why there are "starter homes". i rather like living down in midnapore, but it wasn't exactly where we wanted to move or the type of house we wanted. All our family lives on the north side and so do most of our friends. Eventually, we probably will move closer but it isn't the right time yet.

It's much easier to buy your second house becuase you have the leverage of equity towards your next purchace.

Your kids are young and a move wouldn't disrupt them for long, jobs can be changed, for income or convienence, transportation can be arranged. I'm just saying there are options if you really are serious about owning your own home and not just finding excuses as to why you could never own one.

What you think you might save, you end up paying for in the extra costs of transportation, whether it's transit or gas. Jobs are not just easily changed, especially when it's a very good job, with very good benefits. Not that he hasn't put his resume out there, he does watch for other opportunities. None better have come around.

And who wants to work a 12 hour day, 5 days a week? because the transit in the city is fucking ridiculous. And if we stay within a reasonable distance of his work, he can do things like riding his bike to and from work on good days (and it only takes about 5 to 10 minutes more than his current 20 min bus ride to work, who in their right mind would give that up in this city?)
