"Save the baby, please..."
Her sobs ranged in his ears, her bloody hand prints coating the sleeve of his white coat in a desperate attempt to let out her last few words. Jaejoong stood still, numbed by the feeling of hatred flowing through him when he had saw Mrs. Shim’s body being rushed into the intensive care unit.
He blamed himself. He should have forced her to leave that man, he should have convined her that it would have been unhealthy for the baby, if only he had tried harder-then maybe her story would different from his. He wanted her child to be borne safety into this world with a mother to depend on-and yet now he was faced with the decision. Mother or child?
She looked desperately into his eyes with blood shot eyes, clutching his arm tightly, whispering the last words before the anesthetics began to work its way around her body. "Please take care of him. Please protect him..." the tear rolled from the corner of her eyes drifted together and her fingers slowly loosened around his sleeve, leaving a smeared bloody imprint on the edge.
He stood before her limp body, her crimson blood leaking everywhere upon the bed.
"Doctor Youngwong! Who do we save?" the nervous nurse asked as she immediately propped the patient’s legs onto the metal holders stationed at the end of every bed in the department, ready for his command.
And he was faced with the hardest decision since his chaotic life had fell into order after years of struggling. Mother or child?
Silence ate at the bodies in the ER; the only thing that could be heard was the ticking arm of the clock placed in the room eons ago. A reminder to all doctors that every second, every minute, every hour, every day, patients lives are in their hand to control.
"Save-save the child." his command had condemned her death, but it was her last wish for her young in take the first gasp of breath on Earth and to live on without her. After all it is every mothers wish for their child to live happily and healthily and Jaejoong wasn’t cruel enough to allow to feel the pain of losing a child if he decides to choose her. Because he had felt that pain before-if it would have been a choice, he would have chosen Inwhan.
Save the child….
The room fell silent as the baby came out of her womb, held by his bloody glove covered hands, without a sound. Not a single cry emitted until Jaejoong held it close to his chest allowing the gooey water that it had been surrounded in smear all over his cloths, he held the child close placing two gloved fingers against the scrunched up neck, feeling for pulse at the throat. The icy fingers touching the wrinkly skin had brought a small whine to the distinguished lips of the child followed by soft whimpering that soon enough bloomed into a cry. The child was immediately taken out of his hands and into the trained nurses from the intensive care of the Still Born unit. He spared the child one last glance before snapping his head back to his patient-the sound of a flat heart beat passing through the monitor and into his ears.
The nurse took a second to look at the clock, "Death time 2:01 am." she murmured softly. He watched as the nurse fluttered a white blanket above her now beat less body pulling it up until her whole frame was covered in a sheet of white ready to be sent to the morgue of the Hospital for examination.
He disposed the gloves into the sink compartment along with his blue surgery outfit before cupping the water into his hands before he splashed it against his face to wash away the sweat and hopefully the look of guilt. Had he made the right choice?
When Jaejoong left the operation room, hoping to see tearful faces and sullen looks from family and friends at the news that the mother had passed away in the stages of conception but he was greeted with a rather clam Mr. Shim, practically flirting with the girl half his age that was sitting next to him. When they had both finally caught his distasteful gaze towards them, Mr. Shim straightened up and approached him. While the girl with her dark purple make up looked away, un-interested at anything but chewing the gum in between her pearly white teeth.
"How’s the child?" the words slipped casually from his lips.
"He's fine," Jaejoong snarled, his fist clenching at his sides at the words. "He?" he heard Mr. Shim repeat and he didn't miss the rather smug like smile on his face. Mr. Shim turned to face his companion, "Did you hear darling, it's a boy." He said with a rather proud smile as if he had heard the news for the first time. “I wonder what I should name him!” Mrs. Shim was bouncing off the walls at the news of an heir-that was of course until Jaejoong opened his mouth.
"Your wife is dead." Jaejoong spoke out silently, hoping that the man had known a little bit more about compassion and love. The man turned, looking blankly at Jaejoong as if he hadn’t expected to hear such news, shocked almost. "And all you care about is just the child?" his voice shook with anger. He grabbed Mr. Shim by the collar of his suite, landing a square punch at the males jaw.
"You find out the fucking gender at 18 weeks and yet you didn't know at all?" Jaejoong crouched down pulling the already injured male off the ground before slamming the head in his hands into the corner of the seat. He heard the girl scream behind him for help but he could care less, "Your wife is dead giving birth to your son!" Jaejoong picked the male up onto his shakily legs before kneeing him with accurate aim right in the balls making the male let out an indignant growl.
Mr. Shim fell to the floor from the pain in his groin before Jaejoong towered over him, gripping him by the shoulders, "She gave you everything!" he harshly smashed the male head on the hard tiled floor.
He almost wanted to laugh at the scene before him, the almighty CEO of the Shim Corporation curling up against the floor for protection. Jaejoong didn’t give him much time before straddling the male’s upper body, pulling their faces together by the tug of the man’s pristine dress shirt. "Maybe I should send you down with her?" Jaejoong grounded out between gritted teeth. Sending another blow right into the man's already somewhat loose teeth, the man below him pleaded for him to stop but no matter how pitiful he looked, Jaejoong punched him again-the sight of pain and blood easing the burning fire within him.
"There he is! There's the mad man!" a loud female shrill could be heard coming from behind him and before he knew it, he was pulled back by his shoulder, facing some of the security guards of the hospital.
"Get off me!" Jaejoong harshly shrugged their hold off his body. He watched as the female, crouched down face etched with worry as she helped her companion off the floor, who was already sporting some rather nasty bruises and blood oozing from open wounds.
"Call-call my lawyer!" Mr.Shim screamed at the top of his lungs before retracting his fist up to his ripped lips.
"Jaejoong! what did you do?" his boss ran past his angry form to Mr. Shim's side to look at his wounds but more importantly to keep Mr. Shim happy so he wouldn't sure the hospital for some huge sum for Jaejoong's rather un-necessary act.
"I did what was right!" Jaejoong bit out, almost running up to the beaten male to beat him again but the security guards held him back, well more like Leeteuk was holding him back, the only person who could keep a leash on him.
"You wouldn't have any of this if you didn't marry her! You would have been nothing!" Jaejoong hollered at the top of his lungs, he was completely disgusted with those type of men; those who twist and morph love into some kind of deadly poison, lethal from just one dosage. He wanted the whole world to understand-being born as an heiress or heir did not mean that they were completely and utterly feeling-less. They get hurt, they get troubles, they get anything and everything a normal person does. But there was one thing that an heir/heiress cherished more than anything; love. To feel the warmth from a simple touch, to see the loving smiles of parents during lunch, dinner, and breakfast-but most of all, to be held, loved, and pampered by their soul mates.
"Take him away!" His boss flared at Leeteuk who immediately constrained Jaejoong into one of the hospital rooms, closing and locking the door shut without a second thought to contain his now crazy friend. "What has gotten into you, do you have any idea how much trou-" the clanking of metal scurried across the floor as Jaejoong knocked the cart of medical equipment over. "I don’t care!" he placed his hands up to his ears to block out all other sound, just wanting to listen to his own brain think for a second. Had his own emotions lead him into doing something that he would later regret-was saving the child right…?
"Jaejoong, this is serious!" Leeteuk pulled both of Jaejoong's hands away from his ears, forcing the younger one to look at him and more importantly listen to him. "I know why you did it. Mrs. Shim had passed away-you were given the option to save the child or the mother..." silence greeted the prodigy doctor as he looked deep into Jaejoong's eyes searching and hoping that he had not lost Jaejoong in the dark abyss again.
When Jaejoong didn’t speak, Leeteuk continued.
"Jaejoong-this is not your fault. If it's anyone's fault it's Mr. Shims-" but before he could finish, his friend who had almost seemed emotionless at one point erupted like a volcanic explosion.
"I choose to save the child! I could have choose to save her-then she could have divorced her bastard husband and start a new life without that disgusting infant of his growing inside of her!" he exploded, raking his hands through his hair, pulling out some dark strands on the way.
"Jaejoong listen to you! This is not you. You out of all people should have known that love isn't that easy to push aside." Leeteuk's words broke through to him, settling right into the bottom of his heart. “If it really was that easy than you wouldn’t…” You wouldn’t have been so easily shattered into the bits and pieces that we glued back together-you wouldn’t have been so traumatized when you found out about Jung Inwhan’s…
"Well love should be," Jaejoong turned around to face his friend, a blaze of fire left twinkling in his eyes. "We rich, spoiled brats should have just listened to our parents!" Jaejoong bite out. "We think we know everything there is to know in this world, we think that as long as we complain and whine anything can just land into our hands. We refuse to listen to our parents, thinking they are the monsters of our life when they try to pawn us off, but Leeteuk they have done nothing but look out for us. They tell us to marry into a higher status not because they want more money, it's because they don’t' want us to get hurt!" Silence ate at them both.
"I thought Appa was just trying to sign the contract with the Choi's so he engaged me to Choi Siwon, but I was wrong! He didn’t want this to happen-he didn’t want me ,Kibum or Junsu to get hurt and I ignored him thinking I was the smartest brat in the whole entire fucking world in making my kidnaper fall in love with me."
"But really, I was the dumbest piece of shit to be born. I lost Kim Corp, my father's legacy. I lost love, the one thing I always wanted to own. I lost power. I lost Inwhan, I paid with everything I had for my foolish mistake."
"And yet, she paid with her life." his caramel orbs shimmered in the lighting and both doctors couldn't speak. It was almost as if Jaejoong had opened the troublesome Pandora’s Box to allow the whole world to be consumed by its darkness.
"She should not be replaced so easily by a whore, she should not have died, I should not have chosen to save that child-the child..." the thought dawned on him, the child....
He had almost forgotten the small little being that was now his father’s at the death of his mother who had given her last ounce of strength to whisper three words to him, Protect my baby.
What was he suppose to do with the child? Allow him to grow up under the wing of an undeserving father? Allow him to walk in the footsteps of his un-human kind?
"Jaejoong?" when his best friend realized the look in his friends eyes he began to worry more, the determination set in those beautiful caramel eyes; the same look when he decided to forget his past and walk towards the future.
"I want that child." the words flew from his mouth as if he hadn’t put a second thought into it. He looked as if he was ready to declare war upon any human that lies before his path.
