I seem to have figured out how to play against Pat Diener - I'm 3-1 for our last four games. I lost a close games in Berkeley to Dan Unger that I could have won if I had worked out the end game correctly. (or if I had found the (T)AILORED or DARIOLE(S) bingos).
Interesting incident - John Ortman is playing on the board next to Dan and me, and after his opening move, he draws tiles, places one on his rack and the others face down ... then he announces that he has overdrawn and calls for the Director. Pat Diener comes over, John says that only the one tile on the rack "which hasn't been mixed with the other tiles" and the ones on the table should be eligible to be exposed ... Pat says that all of the tiles can be exposed since he had placed a tile on his rack. John asks for another opinion and John Karris comes overs. The same argument is made - that the rule says "MIXED" therefore the tiles that were already on his rack should be exempt ... John Karris concurs with Pat, and John Ortman says he will comply with the ruling but was going to file a protest ... Dan looks over at the tiles on the rack and on the table ... and says "I only see seven tiles ..." John Ortman does a double take ,,, and puts the tiles on his rack without a word as the room breaks out in laughter.
