I like my job

Two year 10 girls came to get extra help with their Spoken Coursework on Dicken's Hard Times at Lunchtime. I was cheerfully going through it with them, when one of them, Jade, suddenly spouts out, "You know, sir, I was crap at English last year, but you've really helped me." I blinked several times and Jade continued, "I know I'm a pain in the arse ( Read more... )

I am awesomely good at it. However, my arms are sore enough that I had trouble picking up my cat today, so alas I wasn't able to awesomify my boxing skills even more.

Congratulations on the passing with merit! That's great!

It was in Hez's journal.

It's been rather depressing around here, because it hasn't stopped raining in nearly three weeks and because everyone's cooped up, there have been colds and the flu going around. So everyone (which seems to be the whole of New England) has been snapping at each other. The news people and the DJ's on the radio have taken to saying every ten minutes or so "Hold on, the sun will be here in a few days. Just hold on a little longer." It's all a bit amusing if you look at it objectively. At least that's what I keep telling myself.

So, the U.S. beat Spain in soccer. Apparently this is a big deal. There are more people than I'd expect who follow soccer around here. We watched the Euro cup last year (I think?) and whatever was a few months ago, I can't remember, but Turkey was playing the last game. But whenever the TV at work is turned to soccer, people are glued to it. But nobody except a few diehards really has a favorite team. But it's really cool, and I rather like watching the international games. But I'm not sure what is going on right now where it would be a big deal that the U.S. beat Spain. The World Cup is next year, I know that. The Olympics were just last year.

I'm plenty sore myself. We had a sports day. I was feeling very popular - my coursemates had just bought me a bottle of whiskey and a nice card to say thanks for being course rep and building their website. So I ran around the pitch like a demon when we played rounders (for all intents and purposes, it's Baseball). I made two catches, then did a diving run out.

Unfortunately, the girl I got out then fell over me and landed right on top of me. Also my teammate on base was upset with me. Apparently she'd dropped the ball because she'd got hit in the face and assumed I was sprinting at her to see if she was okay. She was shocked by my lack of chivalry.

Then I did the sack race and was rubbish.

Hez's journal won't let me in. She may have defriended me. The perils of being a terrible LJer.

Oddly enough, I didn't even know there was a competition going on until I saw the Spain-USA result and had never heard of the Confederations Cup before. Basically it's a dress rehearsal for the World Cup with the winners of all the continental competitions (like the Euro Cup you mentioned).

Spain are European champions and a very good team, so USA beating them is a very big deal. Because normally America aren't fantastic at soccer.

Hope you get some sun. Your radio DJs make it sound like you're suffering through some sort of famine. Hee!

Yes, wearing professional soccer jerseys has kind of gotten to be a big thing for the kids around here, and if they aren't wearing a Manchester one, they are wearing a Madrid one (or a Brazilian one, but that's probably because they are from Brazil). Surprisingly (or not), I've never seen a U.S. team jersey. And I knew that Spain won the Euro cup last year against Russia, because, surprisingly, I watched it. So I knew that Spain was pretty good in general. People over here are saying it is a huge upset, like beating Russia at hockey.

I've never tried a sack race. And I think that I'd be terrible at it, because I'm pretty clumsy.

And people have been acting like it is some sort of famine, mostly because we had a pretty bad/long winter, which makes summer that much more awesome. We did have some sun today, but not much, but it was a lot warmer than it has been, pretty much summery weather.

Damn, you were unlucky. But that's what tends to happen when you're playing Brazil.

Thanks so much for uploading the story! I like it. I'm definitely saving it.
