Stop complaining and do something about it.

I have spent the last 2 hours reading articles and blogs on the web. I see a lot of frustration with local and nation government officials. I just have a few comments for everyone.

First, stop blaming people and start solving the problem. I do not care who didn’t perform up to par last week. Let’s focus on setting a new standard this week. We will have plenty of time to point fingers and fire people when the disaster is under control.

Second, those who keep making comments like, "They should have evacuated" or "A forced evacuation would have prevented this"; think hypothetically with me for a moment. Starting 5 days before the hurricane is going to hit, we send in our military forces to go house to house, street by street loading everyone up on buses and shipping them 100 or more miles north. The news covers the stand offs as people refuse to leave there home. Finally, after many days the coastline is clear. People are living in military bases, hotels, gymnasiums, and churches. Now the final day comes for landfall of the hurricane and it shifts the east and begins to calm down. Now, the US Government has forced thousands of people from their home for now reason, causing civil unrest and worse… as the return people to their homes, the discover that they missed a few people that have now looted homes and businesses. This is just a thought from a sleep-deprived individual, but there are at least two sides to everything. We live in a country that allows freedom of choice. I personally choose to live on a fault line, as do many of you. How would you feel if an earthquake prediction forced you from your home?

I am a strong believer in the right for everyone to speak his or her mind. However, I also believe that true character is shown through action. So, those who are upset with the current situation, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Don’t just sit at your computer and bitch about it between your sitcoms and video game breaks. Write your congressional representatives, write your senator, get out and help those in need. This will not go away over night, and just complaining will not fix anything. Recognize the problem, and take steps to fix it.

Finally, what we see on the news, while tragic, is but a fraction of the story. This is a survival story. I have met many wonderful people over the past week. They are not refugees; they are people, US citizens, mothers, fathers, children, uncles, friends… This is what makes our country so great. We have millions of people working together with a common goal, to help those in need and help everyone to return to everyday life. Do not let the actions of the few move your eye and heart from the goal.
