Ben:
I was in the midst of reading your AB when I encountered a paragraph that was copied verbatim from one of the articles. This was made obvious by the nature of the cutting and pasting job you did and a quick web search confirmed the fact. I note that you offered a citation but did not include that the entire section was quoted - it misrepresents the writing as your own. As I have explained in class, this constitutes plagiarism and is illegal. I have chosen to stop reading your paper. I will assume that your mistake was innocent.
Rather than give you a zero for this assignment (and potentially the entire seminar), I am offering you the chance to re-do it and re-submit after correcting your error. Nonetheless, a penalty is warranted. I will therefore penalize you one full grade (i.e. an A would now become a B). Please ensure the adjusted paper is submitted by Friday, March 6, 4:00 pm. Failure to meet this deadline will result in an automatic Zero on the paper.
If you have any questions about the above, or wish to discuss this further, I urge you to contact me as soon as possible. JS
