I didn't especially like the book. I appreciated the happy ending though. I don't remember getting many happy endings lately.
I found the Council very interesting. I suppose that they were elected at some point, but I also wondered where the Council derived their power. Was there a police/military force? I don't remember there being one, and if there was, I don't think that it was especially prominant, except for the lashings. I think adding a military aspect to the novel would've made it even more interesting, though it would've taken away from the laid back tone. I just don't understand why people listened to the Council? Perhaps there were enough people who followed the Council that it was a sort of pack mentality. Or perhaps it was so engrained in the Nollopian mindset to follow authority. In such a utopia, there probably wouldn't be a history of violent civil protest for the Nollopians to follow. Without the precedent, they defied the authority, then left the island without much of a fight. For those who fought, why did their family discourage them from doing so? It is human nature to want to avoid conflict? It probably is, at least for the Nollopians.
