maggots
i'm walking barefoot on a thin bed of maggots
actually it's more like a slim sea of maggots
but who's really counting?
they shift and squish under your feet
making your walk unsteady
like an ensign without sea legs
and they squirt up between your toes
with every skittish step
as the dirt creeps under your toenails
i wish i had shoes again
not so i can crush the grubs
but so i can avoid the grubs
for i grind my teeth when they touch my skin
a mortar and pestle in my mouth
then i spit out chalk like sand
i've found it impossibile to avoid them
the wet ground squirms
and most people pay no mind
maybe i should just learn to fly
for birds eat maggots
and worms
i do however hold hope in the chrysalis
the future in a womb
the coming of change
but right now it's maggots to the eyes
i cannot blame them though
it's not their fault
maggots do not know that they are maggots
they're just maggots
