Crack Journalism

Oct 03, 2005 23:03

While I was eating my dinner this past Saturday I flipped to the Fox News channel and watched the last half of Heartland . I have seen many examples of how that station panders to the "religious right" in the past, and was not surprised in the least to see John Kasich serving up a hot plate of "kiss ass" to viewers of that ilk. One story that stood out as an example of pandering to the "religious right" was about "fringe religions" in Hollywood. Heartland's page on the FOX (see above link) web page teased the story as such:

"Plus, are fringe religions like Scientology and Kabbalah* using celebrities to gain influence over people and government? We'll ask James Hirsen, author of 'Hollywood Gods' and celebrity journalist Jeanne Wolf.

Those stories and more on this Saturday's 'Heartland.'"

There was also a link to the Heartland show on the FOX page that had the following tease:

"Are religions like Scientology and Kabbalah using celebrities to gain influence over people and gov't?"

Sure, I could rant on and on about how Buddhism (see footnote) and Kabbalah are hardly "new" (as John Kasich claimed they were during that story), and how they are hardly "fringe religions." I could also comment on how this sort of story seems more like something I would hear about on Coast To Coast , rather than something I would hear about on a major "news" network. Also, the ignorance* and intolerance of Mr. Kasich was astonishing. Fortunately for John, I do not have time to rant about all of this...

Thanks to John's superior (not to mention "fair and balanced") journalism, I must now call the Illuminati chapter in Hollywood and inform them that our mission has been compromised.

* I would also like to note that John Kasich included Buddhism in his list of "fringe religions."

* As John was asking Jeanne Wolf his opening question, he admitted that he did not know what Kabbalah was, and that he asked a staff member if they knew what it was. I thought this was funny being that John hosts a "news" show. One might imagine that such a position would entail information gathering.
