driving through the country roads
swarms of locusts bounce off my car
like badly aimed water balloons
hitting the windscreen with loud pops
smearing with yellow my headlights
their broken bodies clustering in my wipers
remnants collecting on every grille surface
a hundred kilometres of locusts
causing my driving to be slowed
in a feeble attempt to avoid them
as I wash them off my windscreen
and brush them off other surfaces
I'm just glad that the swarms were only light
that there weren't enough to clog up my radiator
and I start to understand why this small insect
is able to cause so much havoc
when it invades farms and paddocks
