Between Sunday night's episode of Brothers and Sisters and tonight's episode of Grey's Anatomy, I commend ABC for having the balls for airing a couple of very poignant storylines involving gay characters. Honest depictions of gays on television are so few and far between that it is really kind of sad that, in this day and age, when you come across one, it's still a pretty big fucking deal. It's ironic that in an industry that likes to pat itself on the back about how liberal and open minded it is, the best it can usually come up with in its' portrayal of gay characters is to present them as nothing more than tired old stereotypes. For too long they have been delegated token status; typically as the queeny/bitchy/funny/assexual (more like all of the above) sidekick of the main character, even though, more often than not, they turned out to be the brunt of their own (and everyone else's)jokes. Or, better yet, the oversexed and hedonistic self centered twat whose sole plot point was who he'd bed next. We'd take then as we could get them because the simple fact that they were there in the first place was considered to be a step in the right direction.
The last few days have proven to be the exception to the rule, however, and it has been a breath of fresh air. Yeah, the catty queens with razor sharp wit and the whores are still out there, but it sure as hell is nice to see that there is finally some screen time dedicated to something other than a stereotype. That's a real step in the right direction.
