There may or may not be a coma before death. Current thought is that Tamiflu, made by Gilead Labs and marketed by Roche, may be an effective prophalaxis against Avian flu. With increasing fears about the potential for a new influenza pandemic, oseltamivir has received substantial media attention. Production capacity is limited, and governments (and even some private individuals) are rumored to be stockpiling the drug, as well as medicines that alleviate symptoms of the new allergens.
Anyone who seems or acts sick is liable to be rounded up and 'quarantined', never to be seen again, or killed outright by scared citizen-vigilantes.
In Los Angeles, a coalition of the powerful have put together a brothel to service their pleasure, stocking it with actors, musicians, etc. The brothel offers protection, a steady supply of clean food and water and medical care. For some it's a haven. For others, a trap.
