therealljidol, week 5: fear is the heart of love

I can't remember a time before I loved music. To be honest, I'm not sure it existed. My mom isn't big on music, but my dad is. He played all his favorite recordings for me in the womb, introduced me to all of his great loves. Mom taught me about poetry, later, and art, but Dad was the one to give me music ( Read more... )

Aww, this one put my heart in my throat. My husband always wanted to major in music but his parents wouldn't pay for it. Our daughter is 3, and she loves it as much as he does, so we are being so careful, walking on tippy toes to foster the love without making it work.

It's a very fine line, making it love without making it work. My parents were really good about it (neither of them play, though they both love music, and they were always gentle with encouraging me to do lessons when I wanted to, as a kid, even if it never turned into a huge talent), and I'm grateful to them for that. I hope it works out for your daughter.

I'm awful about telling whether first person entries are truth or fiction. This certainly has the feel of truth, yet you wrote above that neither of your parents play an instrument. This was very sweet and very well written. The father is certainly very understanding;

I try to tag things with whether they're fiction or non-fiction at the end, because I have the same problem. First-person stuff trips me up, and I end up assuming it's written about the author, unless something indicates otherwise...it's led to some awkward conversations, that's for sure!

Thank you.

What a sweet story. I played the clarinet too and my dad went to all my concerts : )

This was wonderful, you talking about the reeds and embouchure brought me back to my first tenor saxophone lessons. Do you regret not letting your dad hear you solo at recitals?
