Halfway Lovers

In a funny way, Emily knew that Katie was still protecting her, but this time Emily didn't mind. It felt comforting, and a weight lifted from her shoulders. She had this new control or something. It felt good.

She falls asleep.

It's 10am when she wakes, she feels oddly rested. She's uncomfortable, her spine twisting on the couch. But the room is bright and the sun is pouring in kind of beautifully. Gay, she thinks.

Her mind wonders as she continues to lay on the couch. She thinks of Effy resting her bones somewhere else in Bristol, not far from her own house. She thinks of Naomi, already awake and showering. That morning routine; she could never get to grips with it. Not on weekends, anyway.

A weight plops on the end of the couch near Emily's feet. She jumps in surprise.

"Alright?" Katie asks. Emily blinks.

"Yeah. You?" She eventually replies. Katie grunts in response.

"What we doing today then, Ems?" She says looking at her nails. Then her eyes flick up sharply. "Unless you already have plans, or whatever. I don't care." She says defensively, and Emily's heart twists. She's such a cunt of a sister.

Emily thinks of what she wants to do.

Go see- She stops that thought right there. Tears fucking spill instantly, and she feels like a tit. Katie scoffs and looks at her, waiting for her reply, before realising Emily's crying.

"Shit, what's wrong Ems?" Her lisp somehow comforts Emily.

"Can I tell you something?" She sniffs, feelilng pathetic. Katie nods with wide eyes, unsure of what to do. Her mind rushes between her natural instinct to protect her little sister, and what Emily said to her.

"Want some tea?" She eventually says. It was the right thing to say. She rests her hand on Emily's arm and guides her to the kitchen. Emily sits down while Katie flicks the kettle on.

"So?" Emily blinks at her sister, not understanding.

"So what?" She says slowly to Katie.

"Talk." That's how the conversation starts.

***

Katie's mind fucking races as Emily spills the dirty secrets she's been keeping. Emily sobs uncontrollably through each word, guilt tearing through her, beating against the walls of her heart. Katie can hardly believe it.

"You're sleeping with Effy?" She says, wide eyed, staring at the floor as she tries to make sense of the life she had no idea Emily lead. Her sister nods.

Katie screws her eyes shut as she thinks. Her mind feels like a fist. She wants to scream at her, what the fuck is she doing, Effy's insane. Effy's not only insane, she's a cunting whore and Katie hates her.

"Why?" She says instead.

"I don't remember." She says, her words stumble from her mouth.

"What about Naomi?" Emily closes her eyes, pain rips through her chest. Fresh tears spring to her eyes, and fall from her lashes. Katie doesn't say anything. She could comfort her, and tell her it's okay, but what good would it do? It isn't okay.

Minutes pass, and eventually Emily's lips part slightly. It's a whisper, and it's a lie.

"I don't know."

Katie waits.

"I... I think..." She stutters. She lowers her voice to a whisper, as if she can hardly bare to hear the words come from her own lips. "I love her."

Katie doesn't ask who, it's not important. But she does look Emily straight in the eyes as she thinks. Emily looks down. She's ashamed of herself, isn't she. Emily says she needs to go. She needs to do things, she says. Katie thinks she needs to run away. But she's not.

She rides her bike through Bristol's traffic, and Bristol's suburbia. She arrives where she needs to be.

She stands at the door. She continues standing there.

Fucking fuck shit. What the titting hell has she done. Should she do it? Jesus Christ, just do it.

"Emily?" She hears from behind her. She spins around nervously. "What are you doing here?"

"I... We..."She stammers. She takes a deep breath. "We need to talk." Naomi's face falls.

They don't go inside.

Emily's not honest. She doesn't tell Naomi why, even when she begs. Tears stream down Naomi's flushed cheeks. She grabs Emily's hand and pulls her closer. Emily pulls away.

"I love you." Naomi whispers.

"You're scared." Emily says quietly. "You're scared to love me."

Emily walks away then. Naomi drops the bags she was holding and sinks to the floor. Emily swallows sharply, and walks away. Her heart breaks.

She loved Naomi.

She sits in the park and takes her phone from her bag. She texts Katie.

I just broke up with Naomi

Katie replies quickly. Emily doesn't consider the truth; that Katie had been waiting by her phone since Emily left, waiting in case Emily needed her, needed anything.

So you chose?

Yeah.

Emily rides her bike to Effy's house next. It's almost 2pm when she arrives. She hasn't seen Effy in a while. She missed her.

But she missed Naomi too. She tries not to think of Naomi.

She doesn't knock on Effy's door, she's nervous around the Stonems. She calls instead.

"Ems?" Her voice scrapes through the phone. She's tired, Emily knows her voice.

"I'm outside." She tells her. Effy hangs up without a word. Emily hates that, she never knows what's going on. She waits for a minute, unsure if Effy's coming. She does, of course.

Effy opens the door in just a t-shirt, underwear, and socks. Emily drags her vision over Effy. Jesus. She just.. God. Nevermind.

"When did you last sleep?" Effy's eyes are dark and heavy.

"With you." She says quietly. Emily nods.

"Let's go inside." She leads Effy to her bedroom. They sit down on her bed.

"You want to break up." Effy says flopping back on her bed and closing her eyes.

"Yeah." Emily agrees.

"You thought we were girlfriends." Effy mumbles quietly.

"Weren't we?" Emily challenges, but she feels stupid on the inside. Did Effy feel nothing? Was it just a game? Jesus.

"We are." She breaks Emily's train of thought. Effy sits up and crosses her legs. She looks into Emily's eyes for a long time.

Emily gets lost in those oceans. She doesn't feel comfortable, but she doesn't say anything. She lets Effy evaluate.

"Why do you want to break up?" She asks quietly, now looking at her hands. Emily's heart beats harder as she watches Effy change. She's so vulnerable really. It's heartbreaking.

Emily's lips part slightly. "I don't know." She whispers. "I broke up with Naomi."

Effy's eyes flick up to meet Emily's dark and confused eyes. Effy's lips, those lips Emily adores, open to say something.

"I..." Her tongue rests against her teeth, but she stops herself.

Nevermind.

She leans forward, gently rests her hand on the back of Emily's neck. Her lips press against Emily's gently. Emily lets it happen.

She lets Effy push her back on the bed and lower her hips to meet Emily's. She doesn't stop her when Effy's hand slides up her thigh beneath her skirt while her lips slowly drag along her neck to her ear, pressing gentle kisses along the way.

Her lips stay by Emily's ear, as she builds courage.

Emily pushes her hips into Effy as her fingers find her clit, and stroke slow circles. She breathes heavily in Emily's ear, waiting.

A moan escapes Emily's rosy lips. Effy smiles against her ear and runs her fingertips along Emily's slit. She whispers quietly to Emily. "You're so wet." Emily moans louder.

She easily slips her fingers inside her girlfriend. Her hips buck against Effy's hand as her fingers curl to hit that perfect spot.

Emily's already so close, and Effy knows it. She uses her spare hand to lightly brush over Emily's chest. Her nipples harden against Effy's touches. Against her girlfriend's touches.

She shouldn't let this happen.

But Effy moves so gently inside her, so passionately, so caring. Emily's heart is beating wildly, butterflies explode in her stomach, and she's spilling over,

"Oh, God, Effy.. Effy," She cries loudly.

Now.

Effy brushes her lips against Emily's ear softly.

"I love you Emily,"

Emily arches her back, and pulls Effy closer.
