Well I am hooked on blogging FFXI
ya, I always liked recounting my FFXI experiences to my sons while they (basically) ignore me. This is a bit more satisfying...
I'm going to recount a few of my memories of the 4+ yrs I have played FFXI. Maybe not in chronological order, but what stands out to me.
Leveling RDM...my first job! Wow! I was soooo excited to get a fighting mage job going! I had a static from the LS I was in (name escapes me sadly). I remember Nikolai (RNG), Soulburn (BLM and taru), Hanketsu (WAR) and me (RDM) were the terrors of any mob crossing our paths! The other 2 spots were randomly, and easily, filled with a whm and pld. Skillchains were mastered. Magic bursts were congratulated on. Life was good.
We did any and all quests, missions together from the 30s all the way up to level 75! I held them back awhile while trying to beat that ole man Maat. My first stab of envy came when Nik (1/3), Soul (1/1) and Hank (1/1) all beat Maat...I went 1/9 and took a long time doing it. I was just so angry at SE for the fuked up RDM fight.
I had no confidence is what it was. Maat scared the holy begeezus out of me LOL
So one day I settle in with a nice TALL glass of Manhatten Ice Tea. (love that stuff btw, shame I don't drink anymore...)
By the 2nd glass I had gotten up the nerve to fight Maat again! I dont remember now exactly my strat, but after the fight I posted it on the LS forum and many an elvaan used it to win (1/1 or 1/2 damn them). I do remember the screen going black and me thinking fuk! but then Maat came on congratulating me and I whooped loudly irl and started crying...ya, crying irl. One son came into the room at my whoop and went and got the other and they were amazed at me laughing and crying like a baby. They still dont let me live that down...
But it was BIG for me!
Nikolai was RNG but also obsessed with getting maps and key items (why I have so many myself now).
He was also master of getting me killed!!
One instance stands out vividly and I still chuckle to myself when recalling.
We were exploring Purgonorgo Isle. I think it was for CoP. Nik spotted a ??? and clicked it before thinking. Let me note, we were NOT level 75 at this point. I am thinking level 60ish.
As we lay staring up at the sky (I am sooooo glad elvaan don't die face down!) from the 6 black mandy mobs that had jumped us, Nik found from Alla that its for a map of Attowa Chasm quest he had opened in Windy. Nice one Niko! lol
