For our final project in Theatre we have to turn a movie into a play. Not the entire movie, mind you. We just have to show what our sets, costumes, and direction would be. Its pretty easy and I'm getting very into it.

I'm doing "Brazil" which is a great movie written and directed by Terry Gilliam. (He's one of the pythons) What's so great about the movie is that it applies so much to today's world. "Brazil" is loosely based on the book 1984 which is one of the reasons that I saw it. Its just so chilling to see an entire society that believes it is built around "truth" when in actuality it's run by lies. The Government rules over people by causing fear and telling people about terrorists. The movie never reveals whether or not there were any at all or simply the work of the government. Fear and death run rampant and the government arrests innocent people without reasons.

I love all the alienation effects Terry uses in the film. While watching the movie you feel very uncomfortable which is great. Its basically a throwback to the German theatre with Brecht. You want your audience to analyse and think, not just be entertained.

Hmmmm....

I would love to actually turn this into a play and not have it be just some project for class. But in order to do that I'd need Terry Gilliam's permission. It would make an awesome play and actaully cause people to think unlike most of the crap out there that is strictly for entertainment and spectacle. The people that do write about issues that make you think are labeled unpatriotic.

I feel a rant coming on. Maybe I'll do that later. I'm too tired right now.

But...uh...rent "Brazil". Its a wonderful film.
