Chaos spun around as he felt a powerful energy behind him. His eyes narrowed when he saw that it was Ryun.
“What do you want? Are you here to try and stop me? I have permission you know,” he stated ready for a fight.
“Calm down Chaos,” Ryun scoffed. “I’m not here to stop you.”
“You aren’t?” Chaos questioned suspiciously.
“No, I’m here to join you.”
“WHAT?!” Ryun fixed him with a glare, he hated repeating himself. “Why?”
“I wish to be redeemed,” Ryun answered.
“Yeah right, you? You’re one of Lucifer’s pets, a ranking demon, Lucifer’s se-” Chaos stopped as pressure increased on his throat.
“Rumors Chaos will bring your downfall if you are not careful,” Ryun warned before releasing him.
Feeling uneasy Chaos turned "Whatever." If he was there to spy then surly he would fail. The portal opened. Light spiraled around the image of the mortal world, without a second glance Chaos leapt through the portal.
As he grasped his first glance at the human world without being under orders, Chaos could only stare in awe at the beauty of the dark blue sky. Before he could think of anything else, he felt his body being pulled roughly backwards. As his body hit the sidewalk, a medium sized semi truck blowing its horn sped by. Realizing that someone had just saved him from having to either explain his own survival or start from hell again, he turned to thank whoever it was only to see Ryun smirking with an arrogant scoff.
"Didn’t anyone ever tell you to look before you leap?" Chaos pushed himself away from Ryun with a scowl.
"Shut up," he stated. "That truck came out of nowhere."
Ryun sighed as he pulled Chaos to his feet. "If you had bothered to step through the portal rather than leap you would have ended up safely on the sidewalk as I did. So stop making excuses, Chaos."
Chaos stuck his tongue out at the other demon. Ryun just rolled his eyes and looked around, judging from the filth around them he'd say they weren't in the best part of whatever city they had come to.
"We need to find somewhere to stay and you need to change your name," Ryun stated.
"Why?" Chaos asked and then after a moment of thought. "Oh."
"Yeah, 'oh'. My name can be passed off as a spelling variety, yours however cannot. Do you have anything in mind?"
"Ummmm..." Chaos thought for a moment. "There’s a name I have always liked ever since I ruined this one kids life...you know when I was partnered with the Influence of Unfaithfulness..."
"I heard about it," Ryun acknowledged as they started walking down the sidewalk.
"The kid’s name was Vaughn... I felt so bad for him I went against Lord Satan's orders and ended the boy's life... I am sure you heard... but anyway… I liked the name." Chaos avoided talking about what Satan did to him because of that incident.
"Vaughn," Ryun said testing it, after a moment he nodded. "It suits you."
"Does it?" Chaos asked. "Good, because I cant think of another one."
Ryun just nodded and looked around. "Now we need a place to stay. How much money do you have?"
"I have enough to land us an apartment in a crummy part of town for a little while. We’ll both have to get jobs I’m afraid." Vaughn smiled nervously. Ryun looked up at the sky; he didn't see the sun so he figured it was fairly late... or early.
"Well I think tonight we will have to settle for a crummy motel room and look for an apartment tomorrow. I doubt any landlord would appreciate being woken at this time of night."
“True, very true." Vaughn looked at Ryun. "So do you wanna try and pass as brothers, friends, or lovers?" He had been kidding about the last part but dreaded Ryun’s response.
Ryun sent him a light glare before replying. "Acting friends, our clothing suggests that we are part of an acting company. We will need to get new clothes as well."
Vaughn nodded and started to walk. For the first time in his long life he was feeling rather sleepy. Ryun glanced behind him and saw that Vaughn was falling behind. He rolled his eyes and sighed, why did Lucifer think he was the proper one for this job? He had no idea.
"Vaughn, keep up!" He growled.
"Yes, sorry," Vaughn sighed. He was very tired and couldn’t help but wonder why. Why was he so exhausted?
It seemed like they walked forever, when really it was only a few blocks. Vaughn was lost in thought of why he was feeling so tired and therefore didn't notice that Ryun had stopped walking. One moment he was walking behind the other and the next he was on the ground from having run into the other. Blinking, Vaughn looked up only to see Ryun scowling at him. How did Ryun manage to scowl so much? Didn't it hurt his face?
"Why did you stop?" Vaughn questioned getting to his feet. Ryun rolled his eyes and pointed at the building in front of them. Looking Vaughn realized that Ryun had found what was probably the cheapest hotel in the city.
"We can look for a better place tomorrow," Ryun stated.
Vaughn sighed, “That’s fine with me." After a moment of silence and a little blushing Vaughn muttered in a little ashamed voice: "I can’t get up..." He tried but his body was too tired.
"Why?" Ryun questioned.
"I don’t know, I am just tired for some reason..." His voice trailed off as he attempted to stand again. Ryun sighed and offered him a hand. Once Vaughn was on his feet Ryun held onto his arm.
"Can you stand or do you need me to support you?"
"I can...." Vaughn started but then he felt how heavy his body really was, "not make it on my own I think."
Ryun sighed again and pulled Vaughn's arm over his shoulders. "Act drunk," Ryun stated before leading them into the hotel.
Vaughn started to giggle and sway his body. "I'm not drunk!" he nearly shouted. "I am just a little tipsy…"
"Yeah, yeah, you're not drunk my ass," Ryun said. He dumped Vaughn into a chair in the hotel lobby and went up to the desk to get them a room for the night.
The young clerk was staring in awe at the beautiful man that had just entered. She stuttered as he approached. "W-welcome! Would you like a room for the night?"
"Yes, preferably one with double beds if you have it," Ryun replied. "My friend is from out of town and rather drunk so it would be better if he did not head back on his own."
Vaughn laughed obnoxiously. "Aww he doesn’t wanna share a bed with me..."
"Sure..." the desk lady uttered as she started typing in the information for the room.
Ryun waited, ignoring the glances the woman kept shooting at him.
“How will you be paying for this, sir?"
“Cash," Ryun answered pulling a medium sized wad of bills out of a pouch at his belt.
"A-alright." She finished the transaction and passed him a room key. Vaughn fell to the floor drooling.
"Thank you," Ryun said taking the key and turning back to Vaughn. He sighed and didn't bother pulling him up. Ryun just scooped Vaughn up in his arms and headed off for their room.
Once inside the room Vaughn glanced up at Ryun. "Too much?" He asked with a smirk. Ryun dropped him on one of the beds.
"I told you to act drunk not mental, the drool was a little much," he replied.
"Sorry," Vaughn fell back on the bed. He looked around for a second. "Hey, are you even tired?"
"Exhausted," Ryun answered removing his cape.
Vaughn stared up at the ceiling. His vision started to go fuzzy as his eyes grew heavier. Before he knew it... he was fast asleep.
Ryun settled himself on the empty bed; he removed his boots and then lay back bringing his cape up around himself. He didn't trust the sheets on these beds enough to get under the covers. Yawning he used his mental abilities to turn off the lights. Once the room was dark he quickly slipped into sleep.
The morning felt good to Vaughn as he sat up refreshed. Ryun still lay asleep as he used some of his power to alter his clothes a bit. After getting dressed, Vaughn sat on Ryun's bed and leaned over him
"...What do you want Chaos?" Ryun mumbled, not opening his eyes.
"Its Vaughn now," he muttered. "Anyway I was just wondering if I now needed to act hung over so we can go find a new place to live and jobs."
"I don't think anyone would hire you if you acted hung over," Ryun replied.
"I was joking" Vaughn sighed
"But that aside, we need new clothes too."
"We have a bit of money. We will use yours to get an apartment and mine for anything else we need until our jobs start paying. Why don't you go ask the person at the desk for a job or housing list?"
"I could I suppose." Vaughn leaned in close to Ryun. "Are you just going to sleep all day?"
"Perhaps if you'll shut up."
Vaughn smirked as he stood. "Fine then." Spontaneously Vaughn burst into song and dance causing as much noise as he could without pissing off the possible neighbors.
Ryun growled as he sat up grabbing Vaughn with a mental hand around his throat effectively shutting him up.
"Chaos, go and make yourself useful before I kill you."
Vaughn's eyes changed from playful to cold. "Sure, why not...its Vaughn by the way."
"I know but you will forever be Chaos when you piss me off," Ryun replied.
"Well, in the future... remember why I was named Chaos when you try and threaten me." True, as Chaos Vaughn was formidable but he had hoped to never use those powers again. However, he refused to be threatened by someone who he had doubts about their sincerity. "Although..." he continued with his thoughts aloud. "Even with all that power, you would still kick my ass wouldn’t you?"
"Should I feel the need for it, yes," Ryun replied.
Vaughn nodded. Without another word he walked out the door.
Once Vaughn was gone Ryun sighed and stood stretching. He would have much rather continue to sleep but Vaughn was awake and as talkative as he was Ryun would never get any more sleep. Forgoing sleep Ryun decided that a shower was the next best thing.
As the hot water ran over his skin he smiled slightly. For all its annoying tendencies the human world did have some wonderful inventions. Hot showers was one such invention.
Vaughn returned from the downstairs area a short while later with a confused look upon his face. Without even knocking he walked into the bathroom and gazed into the fogging mirror. Not saying anything he pulled out a pair of scissors and began to cut his long flowing hair.
"Chaos what are you doing?" Ryun questioned tying a towel around his waist from behind the curtain after shutting the water off
"Cutting my hair," he answered.
"And you are cutting your hair because..."
"I was talking to the guy behind the desk downstairs and some old lady mistook me for a girl. I figured this would also increase my chances of employment... You can just tie yours... mine goes past my ass."
Ryun blinked as he pushed the shower curtain aside and then Vaughn could only stare in shock in the mirror as Ryun started to laugh. Not a mechanical, insane laugh, but a pure amused type of laugh. He hadn't known Ryun was capable of such a thing.
"What’s so funny?" Vaughn asked coming out of his shock
"The fact that... an old woman mistook... you... as a girl," Ryun laughed.
Vaughn rolled his eyes. "I am glad you can get amusement at my expense."
Ryun's laughter slowly died and he shook his head still smiling. Leaving the bathroom he went to finish drying off and change back into his clothes.
"Did you find anything that listed jobs or apartments?" He questioned.
"Yeah, a newspaper.... and the yellow pages." Vaughn said as he finished cutting his beautiful Tuscan Red hair.
Ryun found the items lying on the floor by the door where Vaughn had dropped them. He sat down at the small table in front of the window and started to go through them. He didn't know what kind of job Vaughn would want but he knew what he needed, something that didn't deal with many humans. Ryun knew he had a short temper sometimes and it wouldn't do for him to kill a human just for angering him.
"Apparently Wal-Mart is hiring....." Vaughn mentioned. "But I think it would be best if I get a job with a company that hasn’t sold their souls to Satan."
“Might be a good idea," Ryun confirmed. His eyes quickly scanned the apartment listings; he marked a few that they needed to take a look at. Once he had found all the apartments in his price range he moved onto the jobs. Very few screamed out at him but he marked some that Vaughn might be interested in. One finally caught his attention. It was a small ad but it was the details that made him look closer.
'Coffee shop attendant wanted. Must be willing to work late hours (7pm-4am). Pays $7.65/hr.'
"You find anything?" Vaughn asked as he finished scooping up his hair.
"A few apartments we can afford. I marked a few jobs you might be interested in. I really only found one that I might be able to do for now. This coffee shop needs someone to work from 7pm to 4am. I wouldn't have to deal with many people I think and it pays almost $8 an hour," Ryun answered.
"Nice." Vaughn nodded. He gazed over Ryun's shoulder. "Hey, why did you circle construction and demolition for me?"
"You do like to destroy things do you not?" Ryun questioned. "I figured it would give you a bit of excitement."
"....Funny." Vaughn said. He thought about telling Ryun if they were basing jobs off of what they used to do then he should find one that requires kissing the ass of some high and mighty douche bag CEO, but then again he valued his life.
"Whatever, are you satisfied with your appearance enough now that we can go out and look at these places?" Ryun questioned.
"Yes, oh impatient one." Vaughn bowed in jest.
"Smart ass," Ryun muttered as he waved a hand over his clothes. Really his clothes didn't have to be changed all that much. All he added was a few chains on his pants and tightened his shirt a bit.
"Gothic much?" Vaughn asked again in jest.
"It works for me does it not?" Ryun replied as they left the hotel room.
"True."
Ryun nodded and they walked downstairs. He paid the man at the desk for another night not sure if they would find an apartment that day or not.
"What city are we in Vaughn?" He questioned as they stepped outside the hotel.
"I don’t know." Vaughn shrugged.
Ryun sighed and looked down at the apartment addresses he had written down. "While I look for these addresses, you try to figure that out."
"Alright." Vaughn said slightly embarrassed.
The first apartment took almost two hours to find, Ryun was tempted to pass it up from the way it looked on the outside but with their limited about of funds he couldn't be very picky.
"WE are in New York City!!!" Vaughn suddenly claimed from behind Ryun. He snickered as Ryun slightly jumped at the surprise of him sneaking up.
"And you know we're in New York... how?" Ryun questioned looking back down at his paper to mark off the second apartment they had looked at.
"I asked....." Vaughn sighed. "And I found landmarks."
"Ah." Was Ryun's only reply as he checked the addresses for the third apartment on their list. His stomach decided that it was then time to announce that it was empty with a loud growl.
"Want to grab some lunch?" Vaughn asked, also hungry.
"I guess we should if we're both hungry," Ryun answered even though he would have rather ignored his stomach and continued looking for an apartment.
"Well, if you don’t want to I can fend for myself." Vaughn said sensing tension from Ryun.
"You sure?" Ryun questioned.
"Sure, I mean I am sure I can find a Wendy's around here somewhere... and I am sure I can avoid killing people." Vaughn smiled
Ryun nodded and wrote an address down on a strip of paper.
"Meet me here in two hours," he said.
Vaughn took it and nodded. After hearing his tummy growl again he zipped off to find some form of food.
During the two hours that they were apart Ryun looked at another two apartments, one was slightly promising. On his way to meet Vaughn he bought a hot dog from a vendor on the sidewalk and ate it on the way.
Vaughn on the other hand had quite the adventure. He found a Wendy's but when he was placing his order some guy stalked in and randomly fired a gun up in the air. Everyone hit the floor aside from Vaughn who was not really confused but not exactly on top of things either. So he just stared at the man.
"Get on the floor!" The man who was wearing the ever so stereo typical wearing a ski mask yelled. Vaughn sighed.
"Why?" The once demon of chaos asked.
"Wha-What do you mean WHY!?" the man yelled. "Get on the floor or I am gonna pop your ass!"
Vaughn sighed again as he tried before he realized he couldn’t kill the guy. So many years of laughing at dumbasses like this in hell and now he was in the very situation he scoffed at. It still didn’t scare him but it was far more frustrating. Hesitantly he sunk to the floor.
"That’s better." the man scoffed. He began to walk to the counter. One of the other customers whimpered reaching into her pocket for a cell phone. Vaughn's eyes grew in alarm as the masked man quickly reached over and grabbed her.
"I don’t think so honey," he scolded as he held the gun to her head. Tears poured down her face. "Sorry, but you just had to be a hero didn’t you?" He laughed as he cocked the gun.
"Hello, 911?" Vaughn's voice rang out. The man paused and turned to see that Vaughn had moved and picked up the lady's cell phone. With a smile on his face Vaughn held out the phone to the man. "Hey, mister shooter, it’s for you."
"Damn you boy!" The shooter yelled turning his gun on Vaughn. Vaughn's eyes widened as the shooter cocked the gun and then pulled the trigger. Vaughn closed his eyes tightly and waited for the inevitable pain of impact... it never came.
Cracking an eye open Vaughn saw the bullet only inches from his head, stopped in mid-air.
"Wha?" Vaughn questioned as the bullet fell to the ground.
"What the hell?!" The shooter exclaimed.
Vaughn felt a nudge at his mind and he looked to the window, eyes widening when he saw Ryun standing there.
"Asshole..." Vaughn whispered under his breath. Standing up he grabbed the shooter's hand and twisted it until he yelled out in pain and released his weapon. The gun clattered as it hit the floor.
Sirens could be heard in the distance. As they grew louder the shooter began to panic. He reached under and pulled out a switch blade, taking a swipe at Vaughn's face. A small cut appeared on Vaughn and his eyes turned the color of blood for a moment. He stared at the man for a moment then with one instantaneous motion used his free hand to back hand the man to the floor. As the man grunted from the impact Vaughn snapped out of it. Shaking he sank to the floor.
With the lights of the police cars outside Vaughn had a sigh of relief. He glanced over at the woman who he saved. Then the realization hit. "Holy shit, I was going to die on my first day."
"Vaughn!" Ryun hissed from the doorway. "Come on!"
"Yeah, coming," Vaughn sighed as he stood and moved to the door. He took one last look at the woman then continued out the door.
"I didn’t even get my food," Vaughn stated with a longing for it.
"We'll go somewhere else, it would be best if we did not attract attention.”
"I agree. Especially with the stunt you pulled. Not that I am complaining." Vaughn smiled.
"You're the only one that saw me. The others were all to scared," Ryun said.
"True. But still, thanks," Vaughn said. "Although, I guess it would have been worse if he had killed me....wait.... can we die from bullets?"
"From a fatal point, head, heart, and any other vital organ."
"Okay, I thought so, but then I wasn’t sure." Vaughn chuckled. "I find it ironic. I almost died for a mortal. But of course I was very tempted to kill that man when he cut me."
Ryun just nodded, honestly if he had been in that situation the man probably wouldn't have come away with his life, or at least what could be considered a life.
"There's a pizza shop," he said nodding to their right.
"Yay, food," Vaughn happily stated.
"After you eat we have one more apartment to look at," Ryun told him.
Vaughn laughed no longer able to resist. He jokingly placed his hand on Ryun's shoulder in a flirty way and said "Yes dear."
Ryun glared after Vaughn as he went to the pizza stand. When Vaughn was out of hearing range Ryun relaxed and sighed looking around. A boy about sixteen looked at him, then at Vaughn and then at him again and gave him a thumbs up and a smile. Ryun rolled his eyes looking away.
After devouring his pizza Vaughn rejoined Ryun in the quest for an apartment. "So where is this place anyway?" Vaughn asked.
"6 blocks to the west," Ryun answered.
"Sweet." Vaughn glanced at Ryun for a moment then looked ahead and added, "You are very irritated with me aren’t you?"
"More with the boy who actually thought we were together," Ryun answered.
"Well then perhaps I shouldn’t tell you about the girl behind the counter....she had on a button that said 'Live Yaoi Show Playing in my Head.'"
"Are you kidding me?"
"Nope," Vaughn sighed.
Vaughn was honestly surprised by Ryun's reaction. It almost seemed like the rumors about him and Lucifer weren't true... if they had been sleeping together he wouldn't have been so against the boy thinking that or the button... weird.
"This is it," Ryun said.
"Nice...I like it and it is near several places I could apply for a job," Vaughn agreed looking around.
"It looks better than the others from the outside, that's for sure," Ryun agreed. He went up to the apartment manager's door and knocked. They toured the apartment and after a little mental persuasion, thanks to Ryun, as they had no paper work to prove who they were, etc... they paid for the first three months and agreed to move in the next day.
On the way back to the hotel Ryun got the job he had seen in the newspaper at the coffee shop and Vaughn found a job at _________. Neither knew how long they planned to live at this apartment that they had found but amazingly five years passed very quickly.
