Primitive pleating

On Tuesday I was given my budget/check to go start buying supplies for the costumes I am making for my schools runway show . A flurry of shopping ensued, and now I am getting down to starting on the costumes themselves. I'll post more specific information about the theme/designs later. But for now I thought you guys might be interested in the pleating I'm doing on one of the skirts.

Sample:

Synthetic chiffon fabric- it's two layers woven together by the thicker white threads. I liked that the fabric gave off a faux linen vibe.

I'm using a modified version of this tutorial: http://www.costumes.org/advice/1pages/fortunyfake.htm
Basically I found with my sample that hot tap water worked just fine, no boiling or microwaving required. This might effect the permanence of the pleats, but since my skirt is going to be spray painted, I think that will probably stiffen/fix the pleats pretty well.

I actually pleated the entire skirt (Lining and all) not just the fabric. Just waiting for it to dry now, then I can paint it, and attach the trim. The fabric in the back ground is part of the same costume. I tried dying it the other day and it didn't come out even close to the sample :( I used four bottles of dye and it still wasn't enough for all 11 yards. I'm going to re-dye it at school on Tuesday, their dye is much better anyway.

Look what I got for Christmas from one of my friends:

She knew I felt guilty about wearing my antique lace fichu so she got me a new one! Now I can save the antique for photo-shoots and wear this one whenever I want!
