*high-fives you for fellow breaking down and spending money on the cage crinoline* Woo, what would we do without cage crinoline kits?!
Huh, and now you've made me paranoid with your new info that corded petticoats don't go over 90" (I think mine ended up being about 105"), and now I've gone back through the few pictures I have of me in the Poe dress, going, "BUT CAN YOU TELL THE CORDED PETTICOAT FOLDS IN ON ITSELF??" xD
The ones I saw in Costume in detail specifically didn't seem to go over 90", but I'm sure there ones that were. I really wish some museums had spec packs or something! I'm sorry I made you paranoid!
The final breaking point was the bulges moving and getting caught in my legs. Whats the point of having a pretty dress if I can't walk at more than an awkward shuffle?
I'm excited to see your 1860's dress, you got the biggest hoop right?
Freaking out about Doin It Wrong is all part of the learning process, right? hahaha
But, yes, the awkward shuffle is no good! I guess that extra 15 or so inches in your petticoat made a difference - plus maybe the fabric of the petticoat made a difference? I don't know. I'm sure a cage will be FAR easier to maneuver, anyway...all those petticoats pre-cage period just get so heavy! Not uncomfortable, but noticeably heavy. Plus I kept shutting it all in the car door!
I actually ended up going with the 108" kit, since I figured that would be a little more practical (hah, a practical hoop-skirt!) to wear with both plain day dresses and ball dresses. I can always make a fluffy petticoat if I want a bigger fancy ball dress, but can't make a big hoop any smaller!
I think it was the 15" + the cording every 1" + the ruffles. The lesson for this petticoat is definitely less is more!
Plus I kept shutting it all in the car door! Oh my yes!
Maybe you will get lucky and your flounced petticoat will fit over the hoop? That is what I am hoping. For the same day to evening effect you mentioned.
I started working on my hoop last night (The video was making me laugh) Did you get your kit yet? The tapes are a dingy "natural" muslin color. I was hoping they would be white. It seems strange that the kit included a black painted buckle for a white/beige hoop! I'm replacing the brown leather with white on mine, since my petticoat is so sheer I don't want show-through.
That would be very nice if the flounced petticoat fits over the hoop! I know the hem will be uneven, but if it fits I can wear the normal hoop petticoat over it, and hopefully that will hide it.
I didn't get my kit yet...I'm trying not to think about how much time I'll have to put it all together by the time it gets here! I will definitely be posting when I get it though!
I plan to start doing all of the main work (Cutting and inserting wires, balancing, spots) tomorrow. I'll try and keep a rough time estimate to pass along :)
Shipping on mine only took about a week, hopefully yours will arrive much sooner since you are pretty close!
Just saw your post, I had pretty much the same experience! Spent most of the day working on it and its now pinned to my mannequin in a lumpy clump of defeat. Also, my bottom wire (The thick one) came broken in two places. They said they had a bad batch and would send me a new one.
In happier news, my flounced petticoat looks like it is going to fit! Had a chance to try yours?
I really hope the "spot" process goes a lot quicker than than the wires.
Lumpy clump of defeat! Awful to laugh, but that's so exactly my experience too, I can't help it! At least I didn't have any broken wires... And I haven't dug out the flounced petticoat yet, but that's good news if yours is going to fit! :)
Mostly finished the hoop yesterday and tried it on with the petticoats (Which all fit , Yay!) Oh my god the resulting skirt is HUGE!!! I think for the ballgown I may end up just wearing the smallest one or else my skirt wont be 1840's anymore. I'll post pictures soon.
Sooooo glad to be done adjusting all the wires on this thing!!!

And the fringe is so pretty!
