Question for those of you who have made 1840-50's dresses, how many petticoats did you use/need? I am debating whether or not to make a third basic petticoat to hide the ridges of the flounces on my second petticoat (the corded one is the first) Do you think I could cheat and wear my dress skirt right over the flounced petticoat? That would certainly save time and money.
For reference my flounced petticoat is a modified version of Simplicity 5726 :
http://images.patternreview.com/sewing/patterns/simplicity/5726/5726.jpgMine is going to be less full (because my corded petticoat is smaller than the cage hoop) and with 3 tiers instead of two. The fabric is plain muslin, dyed to be light blue like my corset. I have cheap cotton lace for the edge of the flounces and white ribbon for the waistband (same as the corded petticoat) I have been attaching the lace and hemming the flounces as one just to save time.
I'v been back in school a week now and I am really loving it. In my sewing class we get to make a set of undies from an era of our choosing. I think I will do Bustle-Victorian since I don't have anything from that era yet. So a bumpad (Natural form bustle) Steel bustle, corset (I can use my spoonbusk project for school!) and petticoat. I also have a fabric dyeing class (Yay dye lab access!) a drawing class, a history class and a theater analysis class were we get to go see live plays (Tickets included in tuition cost) YES!
The next 2.5 months are going to be a bit insane, but very very good :)
Also, because of the way FIDM does Supplies I now have duplicate copies of two Hunnisett (Period costume for stage and screen) books and the 2 volume kyoto book I'd like to sell.
