FIDM: Collection Developement

This last quarter I had a class called collection development. It is a pattern drafting class where you work with a partner to design a coordinating group of 2 jackets, 2 shirts, 2 pants and 2 skirts (one each per team member). Me and My partner's theme was "Then and Now- The Romantic's" Above is our mood and fabric board (Minus the labels I put on after I took the photo).

We split it up that I made more masculine inspired pieces (Pictures under the cut) and my partner made the more Feminine ones (No photos). All the garments we made are in muslin (Class requirement) so it takes a little imagination to "see" how the finished piece should look.

My Blouse:

The blouse had to be fairly "simple". It had to have a collar, and sleeves. I decided to make it empire line (suit the theme) and the collar lightly ruffled to match my partners blouse. I made a mistake with the buttonholes, I realized after I had cut them open that I should have made them vertically instead of horizontal...oops.

Skirt:

A short high-waisted skirt with faux double-breasted button details. The top of the skirt is made from woven fabric, and the bottom is made from a thick knit. If I had had more time I probably would have used an invisible zipper.

Pants:

These capri-style jeans are supposed to have leather accents down the sides and on the waistband. Considering the class requirement (all muslin) I used a heavier weight to simulate where the leather should be. I'm bummed these pants don't fit me, at some point i'm going to have to draft my own pants block...

Jacket:

for my jacket I was really inspired by this jacket here:

My teacher wanted us to use basic modern two-piece sleeves, otherwise I would have re-produced the large sleeves of the original. The jacket is fully interfaced and lined. I added an empire style line (To suit the theme) and decorative pleats in the back (Basted down in the photo). It was required that our jackets have two welt pockets (These are the worst welt pockets I have ever made...) I accidentally burnt one of mine. That is what I get for watching a good movie (Slumdog Millionaire) while sewing :)
