I totally agree with you about large busted ladies and cups, flattering and comfortable (I really dislike side cleavage/crease you get with some overbusts). I don't know about enhancement for small busts though (Unless padded) I feel like it just enhances the smallness because of the visual proportion you get when you isolate the breast...?
There is (Sort of) a commercial pattern by butterrick for a cupped corset. From pictures however, it looks more like its floating above the bust than a cup that the breast is sitting in. The seams on the cup also make me think more of gussets pretending to be a cup. (The seam is vertical, rather than horizontal or slanted.)
God, I think it would be a nightmare to print (and have in stores a cupped corset pattern) but I could see custom RTW patterns working. If the designer had templates for all the waist sizes and cup sizes, they would just need to trace off the right combo, and draw in the appropriate curve on the front panel and mail it off...? Now I am considering suggesting this to some of the people that already make RTW pattern kits :)
One problem I' had (and this could just be me) is that the space between breasts ins't large enough for the busk! I'v fudged it the best I could, and i hope it wont be uncomfortable with wearing.
I'm pretty sure the butterick pattern is a gusset with seams inserted into some sort of Victorian style, like the laughing moon pattern but without the single gusset point. That way you could sew half the gusset to each adjacent panel and sew that seam between the panels without the pivot point at the base of the 'gusset'.
I could see a small bust seeming visually more interesting were it not flattened against the chest. Just like a size 18 will never look like a size 2 regardless of the style of the clothing she wears, there's no way aside from cutlets for the bust to look bigger than it is. Unless you believe Japanese Advertising.
