Sizzled

Oh the Izzie had grand plans for the weekend. As is the case with all art exhibitions, the longer it goes on for, the less likely you are to see it due to the mistaken belief that there’s still plenty of time

Did manage to see the “Van Gogh, Dali and Beyond” show at the city art gallery just before Halloween. It was very strange being able to drool over some amazing paintings, especially Van Gogh’s olive trees. Anywhere else in the world you would have to jostle for a place in the crowd and could hope for a glimpse or two of the masterpiece at the most. On the day I visited I could have easily spent hours drooling over the gorgeousness up close and personal with hardly a human to be seen. There was ten at the most and that was when a guided tour came through
But there's something so incredibly tiring about visiting museums and art galleries so had to give up after nearly 3 hours or so with the intention of coming back again

Less than a month later the gallery announced that the remaining three shows in the six exhibition deal with MOMA of New York was going to be cancelled due to rising costs and lack of ticket sales.
The offerings at the Fremantle Arts Centre are not quite in the same league but now and again they do get a few gorgeous creations. The latest batch of shows are due to finish on 19th January. Was supposed to peek during a recent visit two weeks ago but spent too much time squiggling. So this Saturday was going to be the big catch up. Was also going to pay a visit to the gorgeous Carriage Cafe which is always an inspiring place for plotting and planning

But once again the map is most definitely not the territory. The lovely folks at the Bureau of Meteorology decided to surprise us with a sizzling 44 celsius for today. And they most likely delivered. And then more of the same for Sunday
At least it was only a visit to an art gallery. Other poor suckers had weddings planned for the weekend. A bit trickier to get out of that one. All the guests would be melted

So the number one rule when the mercury is rising and you’ve got no air conditioning or you are too fat to hide in the fridge is to simply keep all the windows and doors closed, pull the curtains and try keep the evil yellow glowing orb of doom from getting its tentacles inside the house
Did not want to do this at night as this is the time for keeping stuff open and letting the cool air in. So woke up at 7am when the sun was already out and about and then proceeded with the ritual of darkness. It helped to have recently replaced the old tattered curtains with big fat UV resistant drapes.
It was still too early to get up properly so slinked back into the very black serpent sack.
The revised plan would include pottering about the Lair, doing tidying, sorting and stuff, mopping the floors and of course watering the weeds before the sun sizzled them all

But the Izzie is not used to such darkness except in the midst of winter. Snoozed and woke up intermittently before finally turning on the radio to listen to the science show. But it turned out to be long over. There was some story about ballet instead. It was the Arts hour that starts at 2pm!
So much for the amended plan to be already down at the local shops by then reading the paper in a cafe and making the most of their air conditioning

Did spend a couple of hours there. Lucky it’s only about a five minute walk to the shops. But even 5 minutes was sufficient to feel the sizzle of the sun as the heat radiated off the sand, the roads, the foot paths and every damned thing. It was dry heat at least. Not muggy and sticky but after a day or two that will change

Spent ages later watering the weeds and noticed that some tiny treelings have had some of their leaves burnt to a black crisp. Months and months of fussing can be wiped out in a day or two

The worrying thing is that these sorts of sizzling days are becoming increasingly common. Within ten years maybe most of summer here will be 35+ and we’ll have a dozen sizzlers in the 40s each summer instead of one or two every other year

But unlike the last four or five years we did not get such a horrid spell on the dot for Christmas and the new year celebrations. So some of the new year’s resolutions started in December just in case have had long enough to be on the verge of becoming habits and did not get wiped out with the first wave of sizzling soul sapping scorchers

But it’s an ill wind that blows no good. It really is time for Izzie to make the most of this awful weather and invent her own version of the Dementors - hot and clammy horrors that cook your insides rather than freeze them, sizzle your brain, and make you believe you will never ever have a good night's sleep again. Even too much sunshine can be despair inducing in its own peculiar way

weather, grand plans, art, sizzled
