Izzie still cannot shake off those doomy gloomy Australian dementors which are a surprisingly persistent bunch of creeping creatures. They seem to revel in the heat and are most virulent and persistent in the months of December to February.
They bugger up your eyes so that even diamonds and gold look like disgusting brown mud and they fog up the brain so that you cannot think of anything remotely cheerful or pretty much of anything at all. But worst of all, they have taken to hiding in coffee cups.
On Thursday pottered past The Well book shop which is closing around Christmas and presently has everything at 40% off. The inner vulture could not resist the temptation. Had previously got a big fat book by Robert Fisk and another “Finding Moonshine” about the history of the study of symmetry as well as one of those John Seymour organic gardening books which at just over half price is about what you would pay online for it.
This was going to be the last visit so could not resist one more peek. In spite of all the best of intentions was feeling most irrational indeed. The serpent had borrowed a certain book some four years ago and while interesting in bits found it dreadfully fluffy and like some sort of script from an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Could get this book from any old library any time and also acquired its infinitely superior sequel amongst a stack of six or so books at a school fete for the princely sum of five silver sickles for the lot.
So it had been easy to resist temptation at the annual 20% off post Christmas book sales and even the big Borders closing down sale which went on for several months in the first half of the year. But this time was different
Guess it was the nostalgia of the last visit to this particular book shop but also some misguided attempt to relive the memories of reading it on holidays in November 2007
Handed over the 21 silver sickles and then slinked off to Lake Jualbup to take a peek at “The Artist’s Way” just around sunset. Sunset is one of those magical twilight zone kind of times but there was still a lot of mud to be sifted through before finding the odd shiny gold nugget
The “Morning Pages” mind dump is definitely the best idea so far.
It was the last week of the Living Smart group. A fascinating sort of adult education sessions for greenies to be inspired and meet like minded people. It did cheer up the Izzie but the bus ride back to the Lair soon had the serpent back in her previous gloomy doomy state
Friday was no better. It started as a stuffy muggy day but cleared up and got crisp and crunchy. Did find a new bookish cafe called The Grumpy Sailor and drooled over some very gorgeous diaries and notebooks.
Sunset by the beach nearly did the trick but not quite. This particular beach is near a gorgeous old ship wrecks museum which has a new mermaid sculpture gracing its grounds and there’s a crazy quirky bar right on the waterfront called Kelp. It was tiny and totally packed.
The old McDonalds has closed down and there is a swanky new board walk. So many changes in this place in less than one year. Biggest regret was a Dome cafe coming and going and never getting to visit once. Sipping coffee and squiggling while watching the sunset on the beach and the waves lapping on the shore is as good as it gets.
McDonalds was the main reason for avoiding this pretty place like the plague. It was a kid magnet and the beach was often infested by rampaging hordes of these squealing beasties.
Guessing the rent there is too expensive for any other cafe kind of place to try its luck.
But watching the sunset and feeling the crisp and crunchy breeze must have sort of worked be
cause the next day felt much chirpier and cheerier in spite of being back at work that afternoon. Was even able to go to one of the farmers markets and not be bothered by the hordes of rug rats.
After work was over at Petunia’s place where we sat in the garden with the odd bottle or two and watched the antics of the moon as it attempted to resemble a hard boiled egg amongst other things
With the present weather forecast for the next week or so looks likely that there will not be clouds or thunderstorms next Wednesday or Thursday. So can have a proper solstice sunset beach picnic. Much better for the serpent soul than the last minute goblin staff party at the day job from 2-4pm. Considering there was no plans for anything at all when we asked at the last staff meeting in November, this is obviously a last minute bit of spin from the new old toad of a boss. She will most likely not lift a finger to help like her predecessor did last Christmas but will dump the work onto some poor unsuspecting house elf from the kitchen
The way things are going, will be a miracle if there are even any staff left to go to her pathetic sausage sizzle but that is a long long story best left for another post.
