Are you sure we have to go through here to reach the next dimension over? Sitting crosslegged, Artsy-Fartsy directed the telepathic sending towards the living ship that surrounded her. Soft reddish bioluminescence muted the annoyed orange of her clothes, eyes, and shoulder-length hair.

A small, alien girl (Artsy’s ward, Quito) sat nearby, tapping on the living wall. outside see please? please please?

From all around them came Seeker’s answer. AMUSED. COULD HAVE GONE THROUGH RED-DEMON-DIMENSION, IF ASKED. There was a slight shift of attention, and part of the wall shimmered to transparency. THERE, SMALL ONE.

Artsy squeezed her eyes closed against the sparkling nebulae outside, not interested in finding such complex patterns when they were so close to their goal. Nearly a year, it had been, wandering from dimension to dimension and planet to planet. You know I’m never going back there if I can help it, she scolded Seeker. I just want to know how long it will be before we get...well, home. Aloud, she added, “I’m going to forget how to talk if we don’t find other vocal beings sometime soon.

SOON, Seeker promised. SOON. The sensation he passed on to her felt familiar…very, very familiar.

Artsy’s eyes flew open. “Oh, excellent work. We’re not quite at the breach-point yet, though, are we?”

NO. BUT SOON.

Quito giggled, then reached over to her foster mother, pulling her towards the “window”. Artsy touched her crystal ring for reassurance, then let the patterns draw her in. Soon could not come soon enough.
