Finding Neverland

Nov 21, 2004 00:53

I have just seen one of the best films of the year.

I am not just saying this because I am a fan of Johnny Depp, or because I adore J.M. Barrie's play "Peter Pan." Finding Neverland is beautiful, real, and deeply moving. The acting is splendid--particularly Depp as young-at-heart playwright Barrie, Kate Winslet as the mother of four boys whose antics inspired the well-loved play, and the children themselves. The story is a graceful and heartwrenching mix of reality and the world that all writers (especially those who never quite grew up) live in, the world where believing is seeing, instead of the other way around.

It's been quite a long time since a movie left me speechless in my seat, not caring that the other members of the audience could see tears on my face, and not able to move or break the spell until the credits had finished rolling.

To anyone who ever loved the play, or who is a writer, or who has felt the tension between what "is" and what we long to believe in: Go. See this film. As soon as it opens in your area, or even if you have to wait till it hits DVD; just don't miss it.
