That would be The Streets of San Francisco, a cop drama (buddy cop drama) from the 1970s.
Anybody ever watch it? It's a fairly decent middle of the road crime show, but the genuine chemistry between Karl Malden (as the older cop) and Michael Douglas (as the young book-smart one) is warm and compelling. I've been captioning it for DVD release at work, and I'm kind of impressed.
Is there fan fic? I can't seem to find much... there are a few stories at the Pit of Voles, and I found someone's SoSF fic hosted at Idol Pursuits.
