Wow, it's been far too long since I posted in this journal. That will be remedied soon, I hope; my new resolution is to have Internet at the apartment within the next two weeks. So there ( Read more... )

Anybody know the cheapest decent graphics program on the market? I cannot afford something like Photoshop right now, but am dying to try my hand at making icons....

Try The Gimp. While it was written and primarily works on Unix (Linux/BSD etc), it has been ported to MS-Windows and Mac OSX, so you should be able to use it whatever computer you run. And it is Free (as in beer) and Free (as in speech). And, while Photoshop users sneer at it, everyone else thinks it's very nifty. 8-)

Yes, I use it myself.

Well, I've downloaded it. I think. Um. I'm not the greatest at coping with programs that come in, apparently, little peices. Did I miss anything? Which probably sounds silly, but my bro is the programmer, not me. *eyeroll*

Back to the GIMP site to comb through the FAQ again....

any helpful thoughts from you-who-have-used-it are welcome....

I'm afraid I can't be much help in the installation department, because I've never installed Gimp on MS-Windows (on Linux it was mucho trivial, just type "apt-get install gimp" and it was there).

But I'll be happy to give any help I can once you've actually got it installed. 8-/

Sarah, did you get a installer package for Windows?

Here's the site with the proper Win installers.

And in case you need a quick-n'-dirty free graphics program, for quite a while now I've been using a program called UltraPaint. Probably nowhere near as many features as the PShop clones, but it's good for quick work.
