Birthday present fic for mistraltoes

Sep 16, 2007 21:47

This is a very belated birthday fic, which Mistral requested. Her actual request was for a conversation between the Sorting Hat and any character from any fandom I wished. I'm afraid that I went with a fairly boring choice. I hope you enjoy it anyway, Mistral.

(spoilers for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)

Well-Sorted )

my fics, harry potter, writing, happy birthday

Cliché-ridden piece of cloth. The accompanying image was a very rude one.

Oh, very him.

8-)

YES. I've long waited to see a fic that truly took those parallels and dealt with them head-on. Beautiful.

I'm glad you enjoyed the parallels. I was hoping that they weren't too head-on, just enough that they were as clear as I've seen them since I read DH.

Well, by head-on I mean didn't shy away, but made them the main point of the fic - you still did it beautifully subtly.

LOL! I didn't mean to quibble with your appreciation; but thank you for the double compliment of the thematic point and the subtlety. I'm glad I managed both. :-)

That was not a boring choice at all. Oh, lovely. I love your Hat-characterization. I love that it teases, too, and that it never lied but could reassure him of his secrets and accomplishment without mentioning that it could look if it really wanted to! And this: “None but the Four ever gave me orders, and I rarely obeyed them. Who do you think you are, Headmaster?” -- So, so, so perfect.

I also admire your Snape-characterization, even if I did spend the whole review raving about the Hat. *grin*

I'm glad that worked for you. I've always thought the Hat was terribly mischievous, but it seems to tell the truth pretty firmly both times Harry talks to it. It's a very clever hat. *g*

Since the Hat was the PoV character, that's fine by me. I'm glad to know you think Snape was in-character though, as this is my first time writing him (wow).

Oh, yes! Very enjoyable. Snape was on my short list of characters before I decided to leave it up to you, so I'm not at all bored by your choice. And I'm very pleased that the Hat stuck by its decision. Thank you a bunch.

Yay! I'm glad Snape was on your short list--I seriously considered a couple other characters, but I really wanted to write Snape.

And I'm very pleased that the Hat stuck by its decision.

I think the Hat is very smart when it does the sorting (just going by Harry, really, though), and that it really was built to respond both to the structure of a mind and to the sortee's emotions. So yeah, regardless of what Dumbledore thinks about "Sorting too young," the Hat knows it got it right, especially with Snape. :-)

I wonder if anyone's ever written fic about the creation of the Sorting Hat....
