I would do it for nothing...

Hello dear friends and colleagues,

Having reached the ripe age of 75, it seems unlikely to me that my technical surgical abilities will continue to improve with time and experience. So, before the inevitable decline in skills, I decided earlier this year to stop performing surgery. I should say, with deepest regret.

I have always found it remarkable that caring for patients in the operating room or the office, something that I have loved doing, was defined as "work" and that I have been well paid for doing it. I have never found it to be work. And I have always felt that I would do it for nothing. So, this year, now that I have stopped doing surgery, the office overhead has met income and I will, indeed, be doing it for nothing (only in terms of dollars, not in terms of satisfaction). And, at the end of the year, I will retire and begin to explore what's next.

I have been truly blessed in this life so far. My matchless wife, Monika, whom I met day one of three glorious years in the Peace Corps in Nepal. My six wondrous daughters ("an unblemished record"). Training with one of the world's great surgeons and teachers, Victor Richards. Training at one of the world's great hospitals, Memorial Sloan Kettering. Reaching the base camps of Everest and Annapurna. Chatting with the Queen of England and with Sir Edmund Hillary. Sailing and navigating (celestial navigation, with a sextant) a small sailboat across the Atlantic. A blessing I value as much as these had been my long relationship with you all.

With profound thanks, I am,

Yours Sincerely,
