Back in Germany, I rarely encountered road accident sites while driving. Maybe once every couple of years.
Here in Beaverton, I see some crashed cars at least once per month. (And I don't mean fender bender).
Most often the crash is one of two:
1. The most common is a collision of a car turning left on blinking yellow with a head on car.
2. The second most common crash type is when a car is waiting on a stop sign to turn left on a 4 lane street with 45MPH speed limit, the driver thinks it is safe to turn, but then crashes into a car that is coming straight at 50MPH in any direction.
I've actually managed to avoid type 2 crash by a tiny margin.
My car is green and emergency braking helped me to avoid the collision by few inches.
Why people are making such risky left turns at all? This is because U-turns are forbidden in Oregon. I am usually going around the block, driving extra mile and instead of risky left turn making right, right, right, right, left turns. It is great that in California I can just turn right and make a U-turn at a nearest traffic light.
Of course, U-turns are legal in Germany.
