Remembering Unwanted
Inuyasha hugged himself, suddenly-stinging eyes staring into nowhere. It had been nice and peaceful-restful-sitting here in the morning sun, letting Rin clean the scratches from the earlier battle with youkai, having a friend sitting beside him, talking with him, unafraid to touch him. Why did it have to change?
He knew he didn’t understand little girls. He hadn’t minded-much-Miroku’s questions. But, remembering Korana, he had remembered that she had petted his ears. And that had reminded him of Kagome, and of all the times she had touched his ears, scratching, stroking.
And that she wasn’t here, anymore. He’d been fairly successfully the last few weeks not thinking about missing her, but now, the hugely hollow feeling was back and he missed her so!
The hand on his shoulder tightened. “Are you okay?”
He wrestled internally with the aching void, telling it to go away. “I-I’m fine,” he declared.
“No, you’re not,” Miroku contradicted. “You’re thinking about Kagome, aren’t you?”
Inuyasha tensed. He turned his head away, not wanting his face seen, though unable to keep his ears flattening or his throat from hurting. No. He couldn’t admit that. No. No. No. He didn’t miss her. His eyes wouldn’t water. He was just sitting here: resting. Nothing was wrong, he was fine, he was-
Fingers lightly pulled his ear.
Inuyasha yelped, jumped, and was crouching, turned one-eighty, looking for the culprit who had dared touch his ear.
Miroku smirked.
“What’d you think you were doing?”
“Distracting you. It worked.”
“Grrrr.”
