The Bitches
After interrogating Hakkaku closely, Kouga chose to cut away from the scent traill and make for the eastern end of the patrol area.
As the ground grew more treacherous, he kept the pace down, and tucking himself right against Ayame’s side, matching her step for step. He half expected growling annoyance and an effort to move away. When she kept silent, his puzzlement eventually evinced a growl.
She chuckled. Kouga shied a glance, and espied a smile and dancing green eyes. “What’re you happy about?” he grumbled.
“I could run at your side forever,” she responded with a soft laugh.
Worry vanished, pleasure and smugness swelled. Before he could respond, however, a yelp from ahead drew his attention. Hakkaku was staggering, trying to move away from a grizzled wolf who practically in front of him, her ears flattened. Two sideways steps more, and he yelped again as Ayame’s aunt snatched his ear on the other side with strong fingers.
“Ow! Stop that! Why is your wolf trying to bite me?”
“Frost only nipped you, pup. Stop trying to run ahead of the pack, and she’ll leave you be.”
“But-”
“You’ll not get to Ginta sooner, by ignoring pack-leader. Behave yourself.”
The two elderly females drifted away from the chastened Hakkaku.
Ayame chuckled. “Sentashi doesn’t tolerate fools. Hope you don’t mind, mate.”
Koga remembered a certain scene back in the cave, suppressing a growl. Hadn’t his sire said something about “old bitches”?
He settled for silence, and Ayame’s nearness.
