Prompt: Around the Corner
Characters: Kagome
Rating: T
Words: 250
Summary: CU. Sometimes playing the guessing game can bring to light a startling certainty.

A breeze whispered through the meadow, flowers bobbed, leaves rustled, grasses bowed. The sun cast a warm honeyed glow over the landscape and the gentle symphony of bird song thrummed. Kagome sat on the lip of the well, gazing off into space.

Before all of this. Before she’d been dragged into another time by an overgrown centipede, Kagome had dreamed. She’d been an average teenage girl, prone to daydreaming, wishful thinking and fantasising.

She’d wondered what it must be like to be the heroine in a movie. How enthralling it must be to be on a daring quest to save the world. She’d been swept away by the drama of a love triangle. Engrossed by the thought of two men fighting over one woman. Intrigued by the intricately weaved plots of the maniacal antagonists. Entranced by the thought of magic and monsters.

If only she’d known what was around the corner. Daydreams had become a weighty reality. Films often threw around the term ‘the fate of the world rests on your shoulders’ but Kagome doubted they’d ever paid it any real thought. They had no idea. They couldn’t begin to fathom the terror that coiled in her belly in moments of danger.

Indeed, if she’d known what was around the corner, she’d have thrown herself down the well. Because for all the heartache, misery and pain, she’d found the place in the universe that she could call home. Now, all she had to do was defend it.

“Kagome, let’s go!”
