She pretended not to notice the way his eyes drifted when he thought she wasn’t looking. She pretended not to notice when he would slip away under the cover of darkness and return in the pre-dawn light. She ignored the fact that when he touched her, his eyes no longer deepened in intensity until she thought the gold was on fire, or the fact that his hands didn’t move so much in exploration, as they did out of simple routine.
For a being that so relied on touch and scent, she allowed herself to go blind and deny the changes she saw, and believe that he didn’t stiffen up when she put her hands on him. He didn’t come home each morning smelling of another female, of a human, and he most certainly didn’t turn his back from her when he crawled into her bed after not spending the night away.
Her strength was slipping. She remained stoic in the face of her world crumbling around her. Her son refused to look at her as she tried to cling to the last vestiges of her dignity.
She saw none of this.
For a small time, in that dark recess of her mind, everything was as it should be.
