Summary: Kagome wakes up from a bad dream

Kagome bolted up out of bed, taking deep breaths.

InuYasha lifted his head off the futon.  “What’s wrong?” he asked, as he put his arm around her.

“Bad dream,” she said.

He pulled her close.  “Tell me about it.”

She looked up at him, searching his eyes with such a look of longing and sadness that he pulled her extra close.

Sighing, she said, “I dreamed we were back in my mom’s house.”

InuYasha felt a twinge of guilt, like he usually did when she mentioned her home far away in the future.

“In this dream, we were lying in my bed, under that pink coverlet of mine, and I was holding you close.  We had just made love, but you were...were...crying.  I felt so sad for you.  You felt so trapped and unable to fit in.  There was nothing for you to do except help Grandfather, no forest to escape to.  You had given up everything that made you a man, that made you InuYasha, to be with me.  You had just told me you loved me more than anything, but asked me to let you die.”

“Never,” InuYasha said, holding her close.  “I would never do that to you.”  He pulled her close to his chest, kissed her gently on the top of her head.

“I miss Mama and Souta and Grandfather,” Kagome said, “But I’m glad we’re here, in your time.  It would kill me if I took away your freedom to be who you really are.  Stop feeling guilty.  I’m where I want to be.”

He held her close, and sleep soon took her.  But before it took him, he whispered, “I love you, Kagome.  Thank you.”
