How NOT To Build A Reader Base

Jul 17, 2004 13:20

Based on some essays Ferrett has written previously on the subject, I would come to the conclusion that there are three types of people that use LiveJournal.  The first being the writers who want to grow as big of an audience as possible (Part 1 Part 2).  The second type is the type that wants nothing more than to put their thoughts on paper.  The third is the type that I am.

We are the people that want a reader base but don’t want to work for it.  We don’t want to kiss your ass, and if you expect us to kiss your ass then we don’t want you to read us.  We are independent thinkers.  We will post our thoughts.  Today it might be something that happened in school, tomorrow it might be a poetic waxing about the moon and stars, and the following day it might be talking about why Candidate X should not be elected.

We don’t care what you think.  Sure, we love to hear your comments, but that’s because we want to expand our friendship base and see that people read us.  We sometimes don’t even mind engaging in a spirited debate on our journal.  But we refuse to whore ourselves out to you to get us to read us.

Deal with it.
