SO I WAS BORED And I bugged Aeon for essay prompts for Joshua and she obliged!

Aeon> How does he cope with hearing all of camp's voices?

In canon, Joshua hangs out mostly with demons and Fiore. It's been agreed between Fiore and I that she is fairly, almost abnormally, quiet in her mind, but he can read her. I assume that Aion and the demons know how to block him well enough since it was the horns that gave him this effect even if it is a bit off-kilter and is never mentioned that demons can mind-read in Chrno Crusade. Extracting from canon some more, Joshua can handle about four humans being around him with noise. He just can't stand cities which means in the upwards of thousands of people in a small place. Joshua doesn't frequent areas in camp that have this problem. He lives by the lake, because everyone is scared of Marcy which keeps people at bay. Since he's arrived, Joshua has less and less filtered out what people are saying as static and tunes in more. Which is to say, Joshua can choose to ignore the sound, much like you can have the radio on and never quite listen to it. So, Joshua has always known the merits of listening to those around him, and applies it more heavily in camp.

Aeon> And who told him to start writing the journal?

For the record, Joshua keeps a journal on all the strange things he sees around camp, be it people or phenomenon. If you're an unusual human or whatever and you've had a thread with Joshua, then you have a mention in it. He got the journal for Christmas, I think, or bugged Fiore for it as a way of having something to do with himself in camp. Joshua doesn't like being bored as much as he lounges around and is lazy in camp. He likes living with a sense of purpose, so while the journal isn't much. It's something that keeps him for going stir crazy in camp.

Aeon> What are the changes that's allowing him to have 'normal'ish conversations?
Ashelia> you mean like from how he is in canon to camp?
Ashelia> or from massive ADD to being able to carry on now?
Aeon> latter
Aeon> oh god, if you wanna talk about both, do it.

So, Joshua being able to speak with people is actually a funny story. From anyone who threaded with him back in the day, Joshua was very focused on doing things that were fun and not doing things that were boring. He couldn't keep threads for a long time, because he would stop having interesting things to learn about the person he was talking with and would wander off. Joshua still doesn't regard people as people in camp, and more things to be studied and learned about. (See above.) However, he learned how to entertain himself with taking advantage of and playing with people. It wasn't something available to him while he was with the Sinners, because you don't really. . . mess with Aion. Fiore is not a conversationalist and a very important person. And three out of the remaining four demons that he lived with was out for his blood half the time. So, Joshua has been taking his slow and sweet time of moving from studying people to playing with them, perfecting the art in a way. So, at first, he would hit for whatever buttons he could find, and he still does this, but in doing that. . . Well, Joshua has learned how to socialize which is something he lacked with the Sinners.

As for how he is in canon and how he is in camp, Joshua is the same and yet not. What Joshua is known for in camp is distinctly different from what he is seen as in canon, sadistic rapist versus a pawn of fate. So, how he came to be sadistic rapist is seen above and isn't entirely unfounded! Joshua plays with his opponents in combat, as seen in every fight he turns up in. He isn't stupid either, as he recites poetry then later creates it on the fly then manages to keep the secret everyone is keeping from him to himself until the end. However, these combine in an odd way in camp, where if Joshua wants to observe something, he has to involve himself first. So, rather than watching someone kick up trouble, which Joshua enjoys a lot in camp as well, Joshua generally has to find things to play with, so he can people watch in ways that he likes. So, the methodology that Joshua lives by, to continue to do things that are fun and stop doing things that are boring, is still very much alive. It's more of a core that explains his actions now rather than the obvious answer.

Ah, Joshua can't be seen as a pawn of fate in camp as well, because unlike in canon where everything is known to the reader, Joshua has managed to keep a lot secret from everyone in camp. I don't doubt that he would earn a lot of sympathy points for what he's endured while still being seen as a crazy motherfucker, but Joshua will not speak up.

SO NOW I FEEL ALL AT EASE WITH PLAYING JOSHUA YEY.

Uh, any more questions? I could go on forever about Joshua, seriously. :(
