"Father! Father!" I ran out of my room calling for my father, or my daddy as I would still like to call him, but he told me when I was five that the son of a lord as great as he was shouldn't be childish like that. I wanted to cry, but my daddy -father- told me not that I shouldn't cry anymore either. I did end up crying when I was alone with my mommy (she still lets me call her that) that night. I asked her why and she said because he loved me. I didn't understand and being seven I still don't. I guess I will when I grow up.

I wondered why my father didn't answer me, but I soon found my answer when I turned the corner. I stopped and watched my father talk to my mother. I tried to listen in, but my ears couldn't pick up anything important. It sounded like they were whispering. Maybe they were. I knew my father could tell I was there by my smell. If I had been paying attention, I would have been able to find him by smell without running around the castle, but where's the fun in being quiet? The only time I like being quiet is when I'm trying to sneak up on Mommy. I don't even like to be quiet when my father is teaching me things he wants me to know, like all those stories about my grandfather and how great he was. But this time, this time I felt like being quiet and watching. I knew this was something I wouldn't see for a long time and I wanted to be able to keep it with me.

I watched Mommy and my father talk. Mommy was standing near the wall of the castle with her head down looking down at the ground beside her. She didn't look happy. It was strange for me to see her like that. She was always so happy when she was around me. I never once saw her cry, but I thought I might see it this time. She looked so sad. I wanted to run up to her, but I stopped myself because I knew I shouldn't be here. Daddy would take care of it.

My father was standing in front of her and I watched him reach up with his one arm, his right arm, and take the hair pins from her dark brown hair. Her hair fell over her shoulders and blocked her face from my view. I wondered if she was crying now. I watched my father open and shut his mouth as if he was trying to help Mommy feel better and I smiled. If she was crying, Daddy would help. He always helps Mommy.

I stopped watching his mouth and followed Mommy's hair past her shoulders and to her tummy. Her hand was resting on her blue kimono that covered her big belly. I smiled. I don't remember when it was, but I remembered Mommy telling me that I was going to be a big brother. She was so happy. I kept seeing her touch her tummy and she would hum songs that she taught me the words to. I have even touched my little brother or sister. It was weird.

I saw my father's hand, still holding the hair pins, move to rest on her hand. My smile grew. Daddy loved Mommy and my brother or sister so much. Mommy took the pins from his hand and my father's big hand stretched out and covered hers. I looked up to see Mommy's face come out of her hair and look up at Daddy. The sun hit her face and something sparkled near her eye. She was crying. Mommy was sad. I wanted to run up and give her a hug, but before I could move Daddy moved his hand from her belly to her face and wiped away the tear.

Mommy smiled and lifted her head up as my father moved his head down and then they kissed. My eyes grew wide and I turned around and hid myself on the other side of the corner. I didn't want to see that gross stuff.

After a few seconds I looked back to see if they stopped and they did, but instead of seeing them off in the distance like before, I saw white. I looked up and my father was looking down at me. I couldn't tell if he was angry or not. I never know if he's mad or happy with me sometimes. Mommy always knows. She's been with him a long time, she said one day, so she understands him now.

"Do you want to play a game?" asked Mommy's voice. I looked from my father and saw her with a big smile on her face as she put her hair back up. Mommy was okay. Daddy made her better. I smiled a big smile and shook my head yes. She laughed at me and patted my head. Then I turned and started running away.

"Come on Mommy!"
