casper-sanSummary: What I can never count on is my own future.
I can tell a lot of things by just looking at them of what is to come. I know when my friends will be having trouble in their future relationships. I can tell you if you are destined to be a movie star or if you are quite frankly suited as a news reporter - not that there is anything wrong with that - instead.
What I can never count on is my own future. Like a curse, I can know everything that deals with my family and friends but never my own life.
So it wouldn’t be all that surprising that when he walked in, I was doomed to ever look at another living soul again and didn’t even know it.
Hair the color of the moon and eyes dancing with fireflies, my breath caught in my throat when I saw him there, dancing with one of the local sluts. I don’t want to say it was jealousy as it felt much rawer, like ownership called for me to stop the bitch from throwing her breasts into his chest and steering her face away from his.
Tense, I veered my attention away from him, toward a boy who looked ready to puke from all the booze he decided to consume on an empty stomach.
“Here,” My friend called, nudging me with a cup of fruity smelling vodka. I took it without much care and downed it in a split second. “Wow.” Sango replied. “What’s the matter with you?”
“Nothing.” I said, flat and devoid of any emotion. The more I didn’t look, the better I felt. And the alcohol seemed to help. “I’ll be back.” Wandering over toward the bar, I leaned over and ordered something stronger. The bartender gave me a look and I lifted my stamped hand up. So yes, I’m technically a little younger looking then what my ID says. So what?
The man grabbed my favorite brand of whiskey and filled me a double shot. Throwing down a few bills, I turned and swallowed back the liquor just as a hard body slammed into me. Stumbling, I nearly fell into the bar only to have strong hands grab and save me from meeting a lot of pain.
“Sorry about that,” The voice had my heart slamming into my chest, most likely breaking a rib or two as I quickly found those firefly eyes looking down at me with amusement mixed with concern.
It irritated me. “Sure you are.” I snapped, pulling my arm free and took off to find my friend.
Finding her lost in some guy’s arms, I sighed and leaned against a nearby wall, hoping this new attraction wouldn’t lead to me without a ride home.
“I’m sorry if I upset you, but I doubt I did anything to deserve that.” His voice, so close to my ear had me jumping up in surprise. Startled, I looked to find him shooting me looks that would make any man run in fear of his life. I growled low in the back of my throat.
“Can’t you just leave me alone?”
He snapped back, crossing his arms. “Why should I?”
To say I was surprised by this, well…yeah, you know the rest. “What? Why would you want to bother me?”
He shrugged his shoulders, causing that long silver hair of his to shimmer.
Envy hit me in the gut at the comparison to my dull black hair that was tied up in a ponytail. No man’s hair should look that good. It just wasn’t fair.
“Look,” I said, trying hard not to get sarcastic or I’d end up fueling this weird interaction further. “I’m sorry alright. Now can you please just leave me alone?”
His amber eyes flickered for a moment and my heart seemed to skip a beat. Why? I have no idea but just that smoldering look of his seemed to have me bothered.
Glancing toward where Sango was grinding against her dance partner, he looked back to me. “Why would you want to be alone?”
My eyebrow shot up, the whole - no sarcasm plan - forgotten. “Why would I want to explain this?”
“Humor me.” He grumbled.
“I don’t even know you.”
Sticking his hand out, he stated. “Inuyasha.” Instead of shaking it, I just stared at him. “What?” He asked, obviously not used to people turning him down, miffed at my rebelliousness.
“You really can’t take a hint can you?” I asked more to myself then him.
When he didn’t back away with his tail between his legs or drop his hand, I sighed, rolling my eyes and shook his hand. The touch of his skin against mine felt so good I nearly moaned out. What the hell was wrong with me? I quickly disentangled my hand from his.
Meanwhile he was busy looking just as bewildered by the strange electricity between us.
Brow furrowed, he met my eyes and asked “Do you wanna dance with me?”
I frowned. “First of all, like I said. I don’t even know you. Second, you didn’t even ask for my name.”
“It’s Kagome.” He stated, matter of factly, never once breaking our eye contact.
I gaped. “How did you-” Startled I found myself stumbling over words until he smiled, faltering all hopes of speech.
“Your friend. She’s dancing with my friend and I happened to over hear her talking about you.”
“She was talking about me?”
His smile grew into a smirk. “Among other things.”
“Ew.” I scrunched up my nose. “Don’t tell me stuff like that. Please. It’s bad enough I have to hear it at our apartment while I’m trying to sleep.”
“So,” He said, his eyes looking down to where my hand remained at my side, “care to dance with me?” I followed his eyes and watched my hand twitch, almost of its own free will wanting to touch his again. “Kagome?”
And just like that, I finally answered by placing my hand in his at my name on his lips. Like a spell, I was pulled in. We joined on the dance floor, the sweltering friction of our bodies as they grazed every time we moved to the beat made me forget about everything else.
The alcohol in my system was nothing compared to the poison of his charm, or the way his fingers grazed my shoulder when moved closer to each other. Our hips swayed meeting and departing only to repeat like an ocean’s waves greeting its shores.
He spun me, causing my hair to spill from its binds and fly about as I laughed at the freedom I felt. It was amazing how quickly I fell, but it seemed I was intoxicated with this person.
Inuyasha.
I smiled when he leaned down to whisper something in my ear that had my already flushed cheeks burning. When I nodded, he pressed his mouth to mine, sealing my fate to the addiction of this man.
Goodbye sanity.
